There were days when all the snootiness associated with going to a high profile college really got to Kyle, if he were to tell the truth. It was mostly from the other students, the ones who clearly had decided to go to this school only because of the name recognition, and the way they found a way to work it into every introduction they made off campus...! It got on his nerves.

But now, sitting in the library, with the vaulted tile ceiling above him catching the last of the sun from the two full stories of windows, made from tiny panes of glass, and with each table lamp a warm yellow puddle of light catching the faces of the other students, he sat back, and let himself bask. There are days when it all just seemed right, the perfect place for him to be.

Not that he had much room to bask. The reading room was packed with people wrapping up finals, to the point where people had given up the pretense at having an impenetrable two-foot bubble around them and were actually sitting next to complete strangers. Kyle settled for a quick stretch braced against the back of his chair, and then made himself get back to work. It earned him a glare from the person next to him as Kyle's elbow caught a thermos and it rattled before its own settled it manually.

"Sorry!" Kyle whispered, and the glarer softened a little, and shrugged, and went back to typing. She typed really fast, actually.

Kyle buried himself in his notes again.

***

When Kyle next came up for breath, it was several hours later, and he was starving. And his back hurt. And his eyes hurt. And quite frankly, his brain was full. He stretched again, and found half the people at his table had given up even pretending to work, and were staring openly at something behind him. He turned, curious himself, and his back made a tiny unhappy snap before it let him.

"What the hell?" He said in a normal volume, and then got shushed by the fast typer.

Behind him, in the large aisle running up the center of the room, were about ten people dancing like maniacs in complete silence. One pair were..., well, he didn't know what they were doing, but it looked like an amateurish version of swing dancing. The guy was at least a foot taller than the girl, so it really could have been anything. A cluster of girls circled another, who was doing some kind of complicated shimmy-step in the middle before she tapped a girl in the standing circle, and they switched places. One skinny boy with a lip ring was clearly slamming in a mosh pit of one. The only thing their dance styles had in common was a certain care in not catching the wires of their headphones on anyone around them, and they weren't stepping outside the square set up by four chairs facing outward.

There was a sign taped to one of the chairs that read "UNOFFICIAL STUDY BREAK #1: iPOD DANCE PARTY- Grab your headphones and rock out with us!"

It was weird. It was really weird. And it looked awesome.

"Weirdos." muttered the fast typer, and Kyle turned to blink at her. It seemed a little harsh, really. They were just having fun. And they weren't bothering anyone- the people watching them were making more noise tittering at them than the dancers themselves.

Kyle felt a minor moment of trepidation as he looked at all the people snickering at the dancers. He started to do a mental calculation about how embarrassing it would be if this got back to his friends. But then, he thought, fuck that. And he fished out his iPod, and ambled over.

He tapped Lip-ring on the shoulder, and the kid looked up, startled. The kid had shockingly warm brown eyes for someone whose hair was bleached that white. Kyle held up his iPod, pointed to it, and mimed confusion. The kid grinned, and held up his to let Kyle squint at the title. He grinned, and thumbed through his own library till he found the song. The kid mimed a countdown on his fingers, and on three-two-one, they both pressed play, and started to headbang.

It was shockingly fun to be so silly in public.

At the end of the song, and a truly beautiful air guitar solo by Lip-ring, Kyle paused, damp and flushed and happy, and looked around. The swing couple had broken up, and the guy had moved on to one of the taller girls from the circle- it looked like a waltz, maybe, and much smoother than the swing dance had been. The girl from the swing dance was standing to one side with her headphones dangling, and when she saw Kyle looking she grinned and flashed him the rock-on sign. He grinned back and walked over.
