On Doctor Who: The Big Bang
Jun. 28th, 2010 12:17 pmI watched this a few days ago, and only now realized that because someone else downloaded it acquired it through perfectly legal means, I don't have the chance to watch it again for myself.
While watching the first half of the episode, I felt rather battered about by all the timey-wimey trappings going on in the story. It was kind of fun and silly, and then got very serious, very quickly. I love Rory so much for sticking with Amy all those thousands of years, and I love the show more for not making that creepy or weird.
If the tenor of the episode had stayed the same after the Doctor launched himself into the heart of the exploding Tardis, I would have been dissatisfied with the episode, but the way it slowed down and took time to reflect on Amy's childhood and her imaginary friend, that was lovely. The stubbornness of Amy Pond saves the world, and that is exactly in character in a season that has been a little light on making the Doctor's character mesh with previous incarnations, so I'm glad that level of attention to detail is still in place.
I absolutely love River Song in this episode. Honestly and completely, she is fabulous and there is nothing that I would change about her actions in this episode. The way she takes out the Dalek is completely reminiscent of the Doctor's most badass attitude from the 9th Doctor.
I was absolutely tickled pink at how they brought in the "Something Blue"- it was perfect and sneaky of the Doctor to get that into Amy's head, and I'm going to have to rewatch before I decide if that was deliberate or not, but it was glorious either way.
Brief list of favorite moments:
-River Song and the begging Dalek
- "Mr. Pond"
-The Doctor's collection of small girls dancing his silly dance.
-Rory the Centurion and then the night watchman.
-All the little moments of Amy being a stubborn git, from being a little girl drawing stars to vaulting over a table in her wedding gown to demand that her imaginary friend show up.
-"I guess this is goodbye." "I guess it is. Goodbye!" and Amy waves goodbye to the rest of the world. Brilliant.
