I ate some cake last night with my friend Johanna, which makes the second time I've gone over to her apartment. It reminded me that I need to buy some oatmeal- amazingly, I have not eaten oatmeal in the time that I've been in Austria. But it's my finals staple food (fiber is important! and ease of cooking!) And no, her cake no way involved actual oatmeal, I just saw some in her tiny lovely kitchen, and it reminded me that I need some.

We spent a lot of time in meandering conversation about movies and actors- I can only recall the names of actors if I've ever had some kind of obsession with them, and she can only remember the names of directors. Whenever we want to talk about movies, there's usually a mandatory three minute conversation involving a brief plot summary and good lines recap before either of us can remember either the name of the movie or if we've both seen it. It makes for some elliptical conversations.

She complemented my shoes, which made me happy, and we pondered the fact that no one in Austria wears sneakers- ever. Or, if they do, they are not so much 'sneakers' as elegant leather foot-borne artworks that comment ironically on the prevalence of sneakers as footwear in other, less refined countries. I am however really happy to have shoes that don't scream "Foreigner!" or "Impoverished student!" to all and sundry. And, bonus, I did not have to out and buy new shoes here, because I'd bought these suckers three years ago in the US under my mother's advice and then hardly worn them. I just had to bring them back.

I'm still somewhat off my sleep cycle. Basically, I've stopped accepting it as normal to sleep until 10 on a day when I don't have classes, but I'm not able to get myself to go to sleep before about 2am. I'm partially willing to accept the accompanying tiredness- I feel like I'm losing too many hours in the day when I sleep late, especially at this time of year. I've never really liked sleep anyways- it's nice to be able to stop and recharge, but it feels like a waste of time. (Beggars in Spain, much?)
