I'm just back from a weekend in the Alps. No snow, just persistent drizzle and really good food. (But so damned heavy.)

We were in a small guest house outside of Vienna, built in the thirties by Adolf Loos for the tourist trade. They've got an excellent restaurant attached. The reason for the visit seemed to be cultural (Ah, the Alps, the food, the trekking through the hills and dales, the gemütlichkeit, etc, etc) and partially practical. We'd each been asked to bring a list of possible classes to take, and to bring a list of reasons why we would want to take them. These were then reviewed by the advisors, A. Millner and the former resident director of the program.

It was nice, but also a little bit of a reality check. Apparently this program does a fair amount of traveling on short trips in Europe as part of the program, and part of what they wanted to know was where we're interested in going, and what we'd like to do. Salzburg came up, as did Prague. Berlin is already part of the program. There is a good amount to do and see.

Talking about classes was both interesting and a little bit worrying. Apparently, credit for German studies will be doled out on a cultural basis, rather than it being in the German studies department. So, that opens up a number of new things for me. However, I'd kind of wanted to take some of the medieval texts classes, but it appears that I would not be able to keep up, as a prerequisite is Middle High German grammar. Beyond that, however, there are a lot of interesting classes that I kind of just want to take for the fun of them. Most of the time, my interest in language is peripheral to a class, not central. However, there are some classes that are just exactly the kind of English classes I would want to take, only in German. (Like one about Historical Crime Fiction, and another about women in national socialism. Sweet, man!) However, while we talked about a lot of stuff, final registration is still some time ahead, and much can be changed and decided in the meantime.

And, since I know my parents are reading this, I will explain something: the first entry you see at the top of my journal declares it to be friends only. Although you see this at the top of the page every time you come to read my journal, this is clearly not the case. It's dated a year ahead, and is only meant to let people know that there is more on this journal than they can readily see, and that they can ask to be allowed to read that. I make no promises about letting them, only that it is there. I'm still making public posts, and you, mom and dad, can read those without an account.
