Today, I was very proud to be an Austrian....oh, wait. I'm not. Crap.

No, it was actually a nice day.

I got up late, after sleeping over at Colleen's and commandeering her bed by an inability to shift my own ass out of it, only to discover that today was a national holiday in Austria. I had kind of known this, but it slipped to the back of my mind, because normally I don't have class on Fridays. This would not have effected me that much.

Well, it actually kind of did. It is the local variation on the Fourth of July, only in October, so it's rainy and cold but still enjoyable. The Parlament building was open today for free, so Colleen and I went and were touristy. I did not bring my camera, but I will post pics when she gets them to me. The outside of the building is hard-ass neoclassical, but the inside is actually a little trippy. Some of the rooms survived the WWII bombing without much damage, and were restored to their original imperial glory, while others are highly reflective of their own time period (the early 50's) and others are extremely modernly renovated. I considered buying myself a tin of the Parlament fruit-tea, just to get the tin can it comes in as a souvenir, but chocked at the price and my dwindling budget.

After that, Colleen and I headed across the park to the Hofburg, where we caught the tale end of a festival. We had some truly wonderful sweet Schoko-Nuss Brezen (that's chocolate-nut pretzels) and Käsekrainer (see previous posts for raving thereon), and watched a string of rather young-looking soldiers drive tanks back home. It was rather "Make Way for Ducklings!", really, only rather more martial. But, also, highly cool.

Anyhoo, I could go into more detail, but I don't really feel up to it. More info when I get the pictures from Colleen.
