I am posting from the computer before my present one -- this one dates from the early 2000s, and is a bit slow. My good 2019 computer is in the shop getting a new keyboard -- apparently when one key is busted all of them are and the entire top of the laptop gets replaced. It's the down arrow that didn't work.

And because of that I have about 10 days either with only my phone (I will not describe going through 100+ new emails there; it is tedious) or this elderly one that I have purposely kept on an older operating system because this lappie has really excellent older software that simply doesn't work on the more recent op systems. So I am relaxing, watching old stored movies (Skyfall, anyone?) and doing offline sorting of books and papers and so on.

ETA: The guy at the shop said I could have them do the work in-house, for about 10 days, or they could send it to another shop where they would mail it back after about 5 days. I do not trust the current postmaster, or his cuts to service, or the possibility that it would end up sitting on a shelf somewhere and not come back, so I agreed to the 10 days or so.

I'm also feeling the losses, and letting myself feel them and letting them go through me instead of "braving it out" or trying to ignore them and having everything get worse later. I don't want worse later; now is enough. I can bear now. I am remembering so many little things, and big things, aond old things and it all just works.

It also means I'm sleeping a lot, around my meds schedule, which is less easy than it sounds. Basically, I have a BP pill and a blood thinner, each of which needs to be taken 2x a day about 12 hours apart, but not at the same time because the stress on my heart is too much. So I am carefully scheduling the one for 9 am and pm and the other for 10-11 am and pm, and that is working. Otherwise my heart bangs until it wakes me up, which is not fun.

I'm also handspinning silk roving in various colors; it's one of my favorite things to do while watching tv, because looking from the work in my hands to the set across the room keeps my eyes from getting stuck at the shorter distance. I did maybe 15 yards, three ply, today, which is 45 yards of single ply. You do the 3-ply by putting a big slipknot loop into the end of it, then continue to loop through the loop and twirl the spindle in the opposite direction of the single ply's twist. The result is useful, not so thin that it falls apart, and looks good. I am thinking of crocheting small keepsake bags from them.

That's about what's happening here, give or take a freeze warning or hearing the fox calling in the park half a block away late at night. I'm glad of that fox and its kin; they are welcome to come to my yard to eat mice whenever they wish.

Unexpected Complication

:: Torrin and Loudmouth have a misunderstanding that sets back their companionable relationship. Then, the source of the misunderstanding causes much bigger complications. Written for the April of 2026 Magpie Monday, from a prompt by [personal profile] siliconshaman, this story is for everyone to enjoy, with my thanks! ::

Torrin peeked in on the cat bed with three lanky, half-grown kittens sleeping in a pile while Squeak slept the sleep of the truly exhausted parent. Squeak hadn’t fathered or birthed the trio; they had been dropped off at the Embassy a week ago, half grown and practically mummified by mud. Whomever had dropped the box at the gate had stormed away, still shouting accusations that “that purple cat” had fathered them.

None of the crayon cats he’d placed out so far had been purple.

Retiree meeting

I slept really badly last night but I managed to get up by almost 9:00, and have breakfast and coffee, and shower and dress, and head to my union's retiree association meeting.

It was very easy to get to, just the bus to Flushing and the 7 train from there. Then a few blocks walk. I thought I was going to be late, but I got there just on time. And the meeting started late anyway.

There was a breakfast, pastries and bagels and fruit. I had a mini muffin and a croissant, and coffee. The meeting was pretty interesting, they talked about benefits and programs available to us. some I may use later.

Lunch was served at the end, sandwiches, and I had tuna.

Then I went back home. I lay down and was going to have a nap but I got into a long, somewhat heated discussion, or argument, with the Kid by text. I think we resolved it though, and ended on cheerful terms.

At 6:30 I came back out and puttered on the computer til it was time to Team the FWiB at 7:00. We talked until it was time for me to have my Al-anon meeting by Zoom.

The meeting was pretty good. M and S were both there plus some other people dropped in.

After the meeting I had a snack, then went to the bedroom again and played solitaire, and also checked my repeat delivery of turtle food from Petco. I am low, and the next order doesn't come for a month. I just can't seem to get it right.

Anyway, at pet feeding time I fed the pets, and started here.

And that was the day.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My union.

3. The Kid.

4. My meetings and the people there.

5. My pets.

6. Bed soon.

Jinwoo Park, Oxford Soju Club (2025): character-centric spy thriller from a Canadian publisher, which I picked up while glancing at a different library epub (by someone who blurbed Soju Club). Subject line is from ch. 5.

If you know which Korean surnames are border-straddlers, you'll find them well represented amongst Soju Club's associates, either directly or via central-casting allusions to kpop/kdrama stars' names (including the voice actress for Meitantei Conan's Korean dub, if I'm not mistaken). One character totes around a copy of The Golden Compass, thus named. The Oxford around Soju Club and another pub is barely sketched in, a liminal space for crossings, as though to assert that there's no need for the Arctic; southern England is unlikely enough.

Soju Club is the type of novel that, while layering secret-handshake refs that most readers wouldn't see (I caught the doublings related to Sacheon in Yeongnam, but I know I've missed a bunch), tries suggesting that it doesn't matter that gyopo Park did his homework for those resonances and evocations as though preparing for a Suneung he never took. If you catch the Korean bits, you won't catch the UK-related or NorAm-related ones.

All you need are the sense that you won't catch everything Park has learned while touring himself out of some boxes, and the fact that he did a master's at Oxford and then some writing/managing for computer games. The latter furnishes the novel's vignette-driven scrambled sequence: turn the page or tap the screen to find the next puzzle-segment.

I think that Park, with this debut novel, doesn't imagine the author to be dead.

Television Re-Watches

I attempted to re-watch Veronica Mars and Firefly - but neither held my interest, and Veronica Mars - sigh, it neither dates well nor holds up. I remember liking this better when I first watched it? Maybe I wanted to like it? The writing and direction just aren't that good. And Bell doesn't quite sell the high school student vibe? The performances are more forced and less natural than the ones on Buffy - there's a scene with Veronica crying in about the seventh or eighth episode, and I don't buy it. Buffy cried - and I bought it. Also, Veronica isn't as likable nor is Keith, none of the characters are - and I think it's a dual problem, writing and direction. I can see why Rob Thomas's work didn't take off and Veronica Mars didn't last more than three seasons, and the revival didn't take off. I may try Firefly, again, not certain, don't really remember it all. I only have a vague memory of most of the episodes.

April Question a Day Memage:

20. Did you sleep well last night?

Not really. I need to go to bed earlier. I've been getting to bed around 10:30, and as a result only sleep a little over 5 hours. Also getting up at 5:50 am. I slept longer, when I went to bed by 10 am, and slept until 6 am.

21. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be?

New York City. I really don't want to live anywhere else? It has ease of transportation, my favorite mode of transportation, is near water, has lots of trees, and a temperate climate. Plus lots of cultural pursuits, and is very diverse in population.

I'm a New Yorker, I think. It's going to be very hard to prod me out. NYC has kind of ruined me for anywhere else. You either take to this city and love it for life, or you can't wait to get out of it - and don't stay long. It's often one or the other. Also apparently, you either love Boston or NYC, not both.

Maybe London would work? I remember loving London in the 1980s. I suck at languages, so it would have to be a place that spoke English as the official language. Also, I don't/can't drive any longer (yes, I drove once upon a time - long ago, in a galaxy far far away - it was called Kansas, and it was back in the 20th Century). I like trains. And I need trees.

Books

To get out of the reading slump - I've embraced one of my go-to genres, Fantasy. And am exploring all the new fantasy novels out there. I have two favorite go-to genres - Fantasy and Science Fiction. (Then mystery and romance, and horror, and sigh, regular realistic fiction which more often than not tends to bore me? I need more plot and world-building than actually exists in realistic fiction.)

I finished Illona Andrews "The Kinsmen Universe" novellas, Silver Shark and Silver Streak (I think), and stopped short of the soft core porn short story (Illona Andrews isn't that good at sex scenes, and I tend to roll my eyes?). It was good. Not enough plot. But fast reads.

Now? I'm reading Gideon, the Ninth on my Kindle - it's a book about lesbian necromancers in Space. Gideon is attempting to escape a necromancer strong-hold. We'll see. I'm heterosexual - so lesbian stories sometimes work for me, and sometimes don't. It depends on the characters. Actually that's true of heterosexual stories too, so never mind. It came highly rec'd - mainly for the banter and laugh out loud sections, also emotional core. From various social media sources - people here, and random strangers on "Book Instagram" (I finally found "Book Instagram" - which is kind of like Book TikTok but far less annoying, and not quite as obnoxious with the marketing and pimping - not that I'm on TikTock - TikTock irritates me - and that's just from the posts folks throw at me from it on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It reminds me of the worst of Twitter - but with videos.)

Also making my way through This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Illona Andrews - in hard cover (so I can only read it at home - although, I am debating lugging it to doctor's appointments). This book is a portal fantasy - except into a "GrimDark Fantasy World" (a la Game of Thrones without GRR Martin's abilities - so think a very watered down version of Game of Thrones?). Portal Fantasy is not my favorite fantasy sub-genre?
It's hard to pull off well - and Illona Andrews doesn't quite manage it? So far there are far too many information dumps, and way too much telling and not enough showing. Every time a character shows up - we get a couple of paragraphs, sometimes pages of character backstory, summarized by the protagonist based on her memory of the book's world. It's kind of like having a commentator with you as you read? CS Lewis did a better job with the portal fantasy in the Chronicles of Narnia, as did the guy who wrote The Magicians, which became a series. Long Live Evil - was atrocious, I couldn't get through it.

Also the world, which is GrimDark, is much nicer to the protagonist than it should be. It's kind of a comforting, romantic take on Game of Thrones, while at the same time making fun of Game of Thrones...or the fact that GRR Martin can't finish the series because he wrote himself into a corner and got writer's block as a result. (We're never going to see Winds of Winter.)

I logged off yesterday around 4:30 and started the process of making whipped ganache, and as per usual, the amount of time it takes to get the temperature of the ganache down to 75°F is RIDICULOUS even when I put the bowl on the window sill with the window open (there is a screen) and a cold breeze coming in. I guess the one good part about how long it took was that I was able to make and eat dinner in the middle of it, so I didn't have to do the whole thing hungry. Then I loaded those dishes into the dishwasher and started separating eggs to make vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. And got some yolk in with the whites so had to start over. And then cracked an egg and it was frozen, so unusable for my purposes.

I did eventually get 4 egg whites in a bowl with a cup of sugar and set it over the pot of simmering water so I could whisk it until it heated to 160°F because aside from my own fear of salmonella, the whole point here was to celebrate my pregnant co-worker so I absolutely needed to make sure everything was safe. It's always amazing to me how they double in size as you whisk and heat them and eventually they hit the temp, so I whipped them into stiff peaks (not by hand), which took about twice the amount of time it normally does (physics! always working against me!), but did eventually happen. All was well as I added in the butter, but then I added the vanilla bean paste (gotta have the specks!) and it curdled. So I had to reheat it to melting, chill it, and whip it while adding another 1/4 cup of butter, but it did eventually whip up beautifully. Both frostings piped like a dream, too, since they were not cold. Pics are here. And they were much appreciated by my co-workers! At the end of the day, when I went into the lunchroom to put the leftovers in the fridge, I found someone packing them up to take home. She was like, did you want them? And I was like, no, I was just going to put them in the fridge for tomorrow. I'm pretty sure she did not know I was the person who made them, but that's okay.

Work itself was fine - we spent most of our team meeting eating cupcakes while everyone else talked about their cats - but I was 3/4 of the way there this morning when I realized I'd left my ID badge in my old bag (I got a new bag for work recently, and used it for the first time today, and I think I like it. It is quite large but the strap is the perfect length for a large crossbody, imo), but thankfully they have guest ID cards so I was able to go about my day without interruption. I did make myself a note to remember my ID card next month when I go in. (well, unless there is a LIRR strike, but there probably won't be.)

Today's poem:

The Thing Is

to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you've held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you down like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.

So evidently any caffeine after 4 pm results in a nuit blanche. In spite of early-for-me rising yesterday, I was wide awake past midnight. Gave it darkness and beanbags and the old college try, but no luck. After an hour I gave up, turned on the light, and read Zen Cho's The Terracotta Bride until a quarter to four. Turned off light, eventually drifted off, and was awake at nine. And awake awake. So today has been something of a bust with every joint aching into the bargain. I miss the days when I could fall asleep just reading in bed. This I suppose is how the insomnia of old age works for me.

Reading on through the Phaedo, I am not impressed by Socrates' argument that everything arises from its opposite and that life must come from death.

Now to her lap the incestuous Earth
The son she bore has ta'en
And other sons she brings to birth
But not my friend again.

Socrates believes in a soul, an ego, that simply cycles through the cycles while I semi-Buddhistically think that's nonsense. There is no I in Buddhism-- though how then do people remember 'their' past lives? However I'm with Stoppard's Guildenstern: Death is not anything. Death is not. It's the absence of presence, nothing more. A gap you can't see, and when the wind blows through it, it makes no sound.

Welcome to Portmeirion

To celebrate my significant birthday, we spent the weekend in Bwthyn Deudraeth, a cottage on the Portmeirion estate: not actually in the village (or should that be The Village?) but just outside, and a few steps away from Castell Deudraeth, a Victorian 'castle' which is now Portmeirion's other hotel. My birthday being the Friday, it was the day we were in transit, so we didn't actually visit the village until the day after - but that will be another post, once I have sorted out some photographs.

Just one picture, for now. I had completely forgotten about Portmeirion pottery, until I saw the fruit bowl in our dining room: but then I couldn't resist unloading all the fruit and photographing it:

Welcome to Portmeirion

We did manage to celebrate on the day with a birthday dinner at the Brasserie at Castell Deudraeth: but don't be fooled by the name, this was a very grand brasserie. We were ushered to what at first appeared to be a delightful table, with windows looking onto the garden on two sides - but it was right next to the piano, and then the pianist arrived. It's not that he was bad: I suspect that he was very good at his job. He certainly had stamina, starting at 7.30 and still going strong when we left, and the piano is not a quiet instrument. I was amused by the presence on the wine list of a range of 'Portmeirion' wines (and even more amused when I saw them in the shop: chardonnay, Rhône, picpoul de pinet, each label adorned with a village landmark...). I might have chosen the sauvignon blanc, to accompany a vegetable risotto in which asparagus had lead billing, but I ordered a Sicilian grillo and was well pleased with my choice, not only because the dominant note of the risotto was pea. Its mild smokiness was also a good match for the cheeseboard (though I also had a glass of muscat de saint-jean, just to be on the safe side).

Back at our cottage, we didn't have room for birthday cake, but we did play with the television set: no internet and therefore no catch-up, but it did have a channel which showed nothing but The Prisoner. This was not only thematically perfect but also convenient, as GirlBear had never seen the show; unfortunately, the episode then screening happened to be the final one, not an ideal introduction. Another evening we saw the second half of a more typical story, after which she declared that she had now sampled quite enough, and didn't need to see any more. (Further research reveals that the entire series is available on itvX, and yes, I may well revisit it.)

On Saturday and Sunday we explored Portmeirion, and there will be more about that later. But on Saturday we also went out in search of provisions, and it's a sign that we were in holiday mode that we decided that it was worth going as far as Anglesey to shop at Waitrose: about 20 miles, 40 minutes, a lovely scenic drive around the fringes of Snowdonia. As a bonus, this took us across the Menai Bridge. Leaving, GirlBer fell into conversation with the cashier, and told her we were staying in Portmeirion: I got married at Portmeirion, she said. Was it closed? Oh, no, there were lots of people there. And when my father led me down the steps, they all applauded. A beat, then: I'm divorced now.

I can't follow that.

Goal 2: Write a blog article each week. 67% (2/3)

Review: This, too, didn't work out because I was out of town. But it did give me some ideas!

Goal 3: Make deck available for use. 50% (1/2)

Review: I thought I'd be able to do both days on this, but it didn't work out. But I did some work on it, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Intentions for the future: G1 - I intend to get up and do the morning things first thing. G2 - I'm going to try to write two posts this week, to make up for the one I have planned but didn't manage to write last week. G3 - I'd like to work on my room a lot this week. I feel like I have been moving things around without actually getting anything taken care of, and it's... embarrassing. So I need to actually get rid of some of the things I have.

Note: I have had a really rough three months, which is why I'm so late on these. I'll keep working on it.

a happy Monday

Yesterday ended up so unexpectedly nice, I wanted to record it.

D messaged me mid-afternoon to say that circuits was happening again that evening. I used to love transgym circuits, I did that as well as lift club almost every week and I've never been happier. But then our usual awesome trainer stopped doing circuits, which is fair enough but I was/am so used to their style and so comfy with it, and then the replacement started doing more of a boxing style fitness class, which was not to my taste (or accessibility needs: my lack of depth perception was posing too much of a problem) and then I kept being busy on those nights or whatever and I just stopped going some time last fall I think.

But I've really missed circuits; I love circuits. It feels like such a good workout for me: I can do even exercises I hate for a minute or two at a time, I never get bored, and I feel at the end like I've really Done Something. I used to have to bring bandanas to tie around my head to keep from getting too much sweat in my eyes, and I forgot to do that last night and really missed it! Because it's hard work.

And most of the people there weren't our usual old circuits people but people I knew from lift club who hadn't been to circuits before (or, did it like once a very long time ago or whatever). Including one of my favorites, who I said I'd meet outside and go in with together. I was really excited for him because I thought he'd love circuits and he did.

And, when I suddenly found myself with plans to be out for the evening I thought I'd start dinner prep right after work -- i did this last Friday when I went to yoga. But as I was still peeling sweet potatoes, D came downstairs, having finished work earlier than usual, and offering to help. So we just made all of my very easy plan for dinner (bangers and mash) and I had plenty of time to eat before going to the gym. It was lovely to spend the time together, it made an easy thing easier but also just so much more fun: being silly together in the nice sunny kitchen (I'm still not used to it being that bright at dinner time! it wasn't totally dark when I was getting showered after the gym, at about 9pm! bliss).

And I'm very glad I was able to eat beforehand: even with V warning me as I left the house "take it easy! you're out of practice!", even though I did take it easy, I was so sore by the time I got home. I knew not to sit down before I got upstairs and in the shower because I'd never stand up again. But I was so happy, too -- and it wasn't just the endorphins making me think that.

That is, I have finally knocked off a review that has been hanging over me for months, probably needs a little more fiddling with but it was very much I had got to the stage of 'just sit down and write the bloody thing' and did it. It's a book I'm fairly lukewarm about, doing fairly useful work with what it does but it feels a bit all over the place and hard to get a proper grip on.

Also, yay, am feeling rather less washed out than the past few days following vaxx.

We have appointment to see solicitor about our Testamentary Dispositions next week - finally found one in the fairly close vicinity through the Law Society Find a Solicitor facility.

Have just been getting Documentation from the local authority who are actually paying me to go and talk about johnnies in their collections in just under two months, so I guess that's sort of the next thing on my agenda.

Though am gradually making my way through ms by deceased colleague, though there is not major urgency on this as my collaborator is still in academic life and overwhelmed with the responsibilities of that at present.

Book Review: The Empire Must Die

Apr. 21st, 2026 02:43 pm

[personal profile] osprey_archer
I know I’ve read Mikhail Zygar’s The Empire Must Die: Russia’s Revolutionary Collapse, 1900-1917 before, because my ebook is spattered with my own highlights all the way to the very end. However, I have no memory of the book, and also apparently never posted about it, both of which are baffling because it’s an enjoyable and fascinating read.

The Empire Must Die is telling the intertwined stories of many different prominent figures in late tsarist Russia: not just the prominent political figures (both in the government and in the varyingly legal levels of opposition), but also figures in the arts, Chekov, Diaghilev, Tolstoy, Nijinsky. It is both painting a picture of Russian high society and exploring the events that led to the downfall of that society.

Zygar is telling a story more than he is advancing a thesis, so he doesn’t advance the idea that this or that thing is the root cause of the ultimate Bolshevik takeover. And obviously any complex historical phenomenon has many causes: autocracy, the Russian orthodox church, a highly class-stratified society with huge income inequality, etc. etc.

However, it ultimately seemed to me that any of these problems might have been overcome were it not for Nicholas II, Russia’s weak-willed, vacillating, but also stunningly pigheaded final tsar. He’s like the guy in the parable who is sitting on top of a house roof in a flood, turning away a neighbor in a boat and a helicopter and what have you because he’s convinced that God will save him, except in Nicholas’s case he’s ignoring warning signs like “we just lost a war with Japan because of our antiquated military, so perhaps we should modernize before we get embroiled in a larger war?”

Or, rather, he repeatedly sees the warning signs, he agrees to direly needed reforms, and then he backtracks the next day after he’s had a chance to talk to his wife. Absolutely a case where both halves of an adoring couple made each other exponentially worse. Nicholas believed that any attempt to amend the autocracy was a violation of the oath he made to God at his coronation, and his wife Alix not only agreed wholeheartedly but remained steadfast in this belief when the weak-willed Nicholas wavered.

So much for the collapse of autocracy. After Nicholas abdicates, why do the Bolsheviks end up in power? Well, you’ve got three main parties vying for it.

The Kadets: the liberal democratic party. In favor of a republic or a constitutional monarchy. Popular among Russia’s middle class, which is not very large. Just can’t pull the numbers they need. Ideologically opposed to shooting people for political reasons.

The Socialist Revolutionaries (also known as SRs): in favor of peasants and the political assassinations of tsarist officials. Despite this history of violence, excited to work non-violently within the new state system that everyone is trying to patch together after the revolution of February 1917. Unfortunately, their two most charismatic leaders recently died, and also they discovered that Azef, the guy who organized most of their high profile political assassinations, was actually a police agent. Awkward. The SRs fail to kill him.

The Social Democrats (also known as the SDs; split between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks): Marxists, in favor of the industrial proletariat; hate peasants, but canny enough to promise to distribute land to the peasants anyway. The Bolsheviks are ideologically in favor of shooting people for political reasons, which gives them a decisive edge while their opponents are fretting about whether it will fatally undermine their attempt to build democracy if they shoot political opponents who threaten to violently overthrow democracy. As it turns out, the answer is “probably yes, but do you know what will undermine democracy even more decisively? Being violently overthrown.”

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Does your crafting change with the seasons, certain crafts at certain times of the year?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

A friend of mine died last week. He was, all in all, much more a friend of friends of mine, plus he was one of Calluna's sort-of-exes, but he *was* also one of my local friends, though I hadn't seen him in eons. Quiet, political, slid funny into everything like a very friendly dagger. African American, aware of it, aware of the political implications. Fannish.

He was [personal profile] telepresence over on LJ, though I don't think he ever came over here.

Calluna (who is White) tells the story of how they were walking along somewhere or other in Boston, in the early 2000s, (or possibly late 90s) and she suddenly noticed them getting odd looks and she stopped in the middle of a crosswalk and said, "...Wait..." and then loudly burst out, "Are you telling me I'm dating a man and I'm *still* not socially acceptable?"

I don't know if COVID-19 had anything to do with this -- he was having heart failure for a few years, apparently -- but I will take the opportunity to link to [profile] werpiper's memorial talk at Ny's Online Thing anyway, because it *might* have. As she notes, there is a lot of Not Talking About It.

I bought a Justice League Dark omnibus because I found a lot of fanfic very interested in Nick Necro
and I have read up to page 435
which has included a lot of Nick Necro.

I was puzzled reading the bits on the internet at how Nick thinks Z and John betrayed him
but reading it all in a row I realised
despite John *saying* threesome
the book thinks Nick is straight.

Well that's a lot more boring as a story.

Like yes betraying a friend and mentor is a story, but, *waves at John Constantine's everything*
they absolutely were shagging.

I'm not convinced this comic is well acquainted with John's everything though.
I mean they're actively remaking it, but I am frequently not impressed with what they're attaching to the name here.

And Zatanna is pretty much reduced to Daddy Issues in a bustier.

Also I am not getting along with superhero comics pacing anymore again. Everything happens so much, on any given page, and yet by page 435 it sure doesn't take many paragraphs to sum it up. People come and go so often it's not always worth memorising the names, yet the book seems to exist to intro them and tell us how the world works in the then new configuration. Crossovers dance across the pages in a splash and then go away to books not covered here. There's no through line, it's too choppy. And the summaries provided by the characters already contradict what I actually read.

Which is occasionally interesting because you learn for sure you can't trust a word out of Nick Necro's mouth and he may well be fooling himself as well, but that is not the only impression it gives.

It's doing a lot with Constantine and Zatanna so I'm glad I'm reading it, but it's mostly making me want to mine it for parts, which is my usual comics reading experience.

I think this comics team that wanders in and out of crossovers is a reading experience pretty much opposite to the focused one to a handful of characters stories I've been liking most lately.
Like these people are interesting, but only enough to make me want a story about them. Not thus far to feel like I've read one.

Comics require different reading muscles.

... as does this 1622 page book...

ETA several days later: I was either mistaken in my impression or the story realised what bits were interesting. Excellent improvement follows. Several hundred pages later.

Today is mostly sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few house finches and a brown-headed cowbird.  Several vultures were circling low over the yard, but by the time I grabbed my camera, they were gone.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 4/21/26 -- We went out to DeBurh's.  I picked up a different brand of sun/shade grass mix that should be without chemicals.  I also picked out a flat of small single pots, a flat of 4-packs, and a few extras in larger pots.

EDIT 4/21/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a male cardinal and a fox squirrel.

EDIT 4/21/26 -- I planted a large rectangular pot with four purple and pink plants and one pink-and-yellow verbena.

EDIT 4/21/26 -- I planted a pot with a yellow-and-white nemesia, a small yellow flower, and a small white flower.  This completes the leftover plants from yesterday.

EDIT 4/21/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 4/21/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I watered plants.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Apple

Apple said yesterday that longtime CEO Tim Cook will step down as CEO later this year and transition to executive chairman of the board. As many on the Street expected, he will be succeeded by John Ternus, currently Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering. Ternus will take the helm on Sept. 1.

"Investors will view this as mixed, as this was a sudden move to executive chairman [and] there was clearly a push for change at the C-suite. These will be big shoes to fill, and the timing of Cook exiting stage left as CEO could make sense but also creates questions," Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives said in a note.

Shares fell 1% in pre-market trading on today(Tuesday).

"Apple is making a major transition on its AI strategy, and longtime CEO and legendary Cook leaving now is a surprise. There was growing pressure on Apple to develop a successful AI strategy, and Cook must feel that the pieces are now in place heading into WWDC to hand over the reins at this time. Cook leaves a lasting legacy in Cupertino, and there will be a lot of pressure on Ternus to produce success out of the gates, especially on the AI front."

Here are seven early to-do's for Ternus as Apple CEO. Notching early wins could go a long way in Ternus building Street cred and silencing any doubt he is the right person at the right time to lead the tech giant:

1. Make Apple AI relevant.

Ternus will get a head start on this from Cook, but he needs to build on it and be unafraid to ink other partnerships. Apple and Google (GOOG) recently entered a multiyear partnership to integrate a custom version of the Gemini AI model as the new foundation for Siri and Apple Intelligence. This collaboration is worth an estimated $1 billion annually.

2. Set Apple up for life after the iPhone.

OpenAI officially acquired Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup, io Products, Inc., in May 2025 for approximately $6.5 billion to form its internal devices division. Despite recent shifts in focus, OpenAI (OPAI.PVT) is still expected to release its first piece of hardware with an eye toward challenging the iPhone this year. Ternus has to use his extensive hardware knowledge to think about what life after the iPhone looks like — and it needs to be more than the foldable device rumored to debut later this year.

3. Reset the size of the Apple workforce in the age of AI, like others in Big Tech.

Big Tech players from Oracle (ORCL) to Amazon (AMZN) to Meta (META) are firing people en masse amid pushes to adopt AI workflows. As is customary with a new CEO, Ternus may want to use his new position to resize Apple's workforce and reallocate those savings to growth investments or shareholder-friendly actions. Doing so would give Ternus an early win with shareholders and Wall Street, even though the headlines wouldn't look good. Apple is estimated to have 80,000 workers in the US and more than 160,000 globally.

4. Decide if Apple wants to put more gas on content ambitions to challenge Amazon and Netflix — or pull back.

Apple has spent an estimated $25 billion to $30 billion on original content for Apple TV+ since its 2019 debut. That's a lot of money for not a lot of hits, other than, say, The Morning Show with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon and the F1 movie with Brad Pitt. Ternus has to figure out if Apple wants to go all in on content like Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN).

5. Refresh the Apple management team.

It's standard practice for any incoming CEO. I suspect he has his preferred management team written up on a doc.

6. Befriend President Trump as Tim Cook did.

Tim Cook has conducted a masterclass in working with the unpredictable Trump. Ternus cannot waste time talking to Trump and investing time in building that relationship.

7. Meet Berkshire Hathaway CEO, Greg Abel.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B) — now led by Greg Abel rather than Tim Cook fan Warren Buffett — holds approximately 228 million Apple shares. The stake is valued at roughly $62 billion, making it the largest single holding in Berkshire’s stock portfolio by a significant margin. It will be good for Ternus to establish a strong relationship with the fellow new CEO Abel. There is nothing like having a Berkshire seal of approval, especially when times get tough.

In additionally, TSMC is reportedly working to build 1-nanometer chips by 2029; Apple could be the big beneficiary.

Apple Silicon has another big journey to take, one that means Apple will probably be the first to introduce 1.4- and 1-nanometer chips inside its systems. If that happens, Macs, iPhones, and iPads will continue to lead the industry in performance per watt.

Why do I say this? Mainly because reports claim TSMC is working to build sub 1nm chips by 2029 — and Apple remains that company’s most important customer, despite competition from AI server manufacturers today.

Demand for AI servers could yet slow, given the looming energy crisis and the trend toward on-prem and edge AI services. I don’t think the current level of investment in AI is sustainable, which is why I think Apple will continue to be TSMC’s lead customer once that bubble, inevitably, bursts.

The latest news is that TSMC intends to begin trial production of its sub-1nm A10 process tech by 2029, setting up Apple to be the first big company to use these new processors inside its hardware when volume production begins.

What’s interesting is that this move to 1nm isn’t just about making transistors smaller, but also about ensuring close integration between chips, memory, and energy systems. A report in 2021 said TSMC was able to reach 1nm by using bismuth instead of silicon in the design.

Apple, of course, already works very, very hard to integrate those different elements on its existing processors, which is why it delivers better performance at lower wattage than competitors. That integration means its systems can accomplish a great deal more from lower quantities of memory, which helps protect the company’s margins against rapidly accelerating RAM prices.

We currently expect up to 30% improvement in both performance and power efficiency from these new chip designs. That implies that iPhone Pro models introduced in 2030 (or possibly 2031) will be powered by these new chips.

TSMC is expected to introduce 1.6nm chips in the next 18 months, though Apple might choose to skip that iteration to guarantee a leadership position once the 1.4nm TSMC process hits in 2028. That iteration will deliver yet another big speed and performance boost to Apple’s devices, with Apple becoming the first PC, tablet, or smartphone manufacturer to ship 1.4nm systems at scale.

What benefits can we expect? During TSMC’s 2025 North American Symposium the company said 1.4nm chips should be 15% faster and consume around 30% less power than the processors inside Apple’s current devices. That’s all good, but it is also interesting to note that the iPhone 17 series hasn’t even made the leap to 2nm as yet, with Apple using TSMC’s N3P process. So, the company has lots of scope to secure the future of Apple Silicon.

If it is correct that Apple will skip TSMC’s 1.6nm process and then climb aboard the 1.4nm and 1nm chips, we could see the two big processor development chapters between now and 2030. This year we can see it introduce 2nm chips, with 1.4nm to follow probably in 2028 and the huge leap to sub-1nm processors to follow in 2030-31.

As these chips will be deployed across Apple’s hardware platforms, including within new designs we don’t know about yet, it means you can anticipate highly significant performance gains wherever in the ecosystem you happen to sit. Whether you’re looking at the next-generation MacBook Neo, MacBook Pro, iPhone or iPhone e, you’ll see impressive performance gains unlocked in all into the last half of this decade.

Those performance gains, combined with improved energy consumption, allows Apple’s hardware designers to work towards thinner, lighter and smaller devices in a range of design configurations — some of which could not have existed before. (Think about spectacles with the kind of performance you once got from a Mac.) The way ahead is clear. Apple has a wide open road for chip design, and while tensions between today’s US and China could derail some of these plans, TSMC’s continued investment in fabrication capacity in the US might help mitigate against even that potential calamity.
