Nightmares upon nightmares again, and earlier than usual. When I dragged myself out of sleep, it wasn't even 11 AM. Not crazy about this. I had some Monster before I showered -- I also made my mom shower before I showered -- and Gorgug did curl up under the sheets with me, briefly. Poor thing was extremely confused because yesterday I changed my sheets and folded up my winter blanket (left around just in case, I'm not that optimistic), and then slept with a smaller blanket and ended up kicking it off anyway.

My sister's been hogging the washing machine since Saturday and it seems like it may or may not rain this or that day over the next few days, so I probably need to steel myself for doing a quick load when she leaves later, so I'm sure to have clothes to wear (that I like and are comfortable... if you looked at my closet you'd be like, what the fuck, but unfortunately my cold/cool weather rota does not encompass even half of that, and it is still cool enough indoors for long sleeves) on Saturday. If I can, I'd also like to start individually washing that winter blanket, the charcoal gray blanket I'm currently using, my green winter coat, and my house shoes. Either pair. Though I may throw the one I haven't been wearing in the trash at this point, god knows how many times Ciri's peed on them by now.

Ciri was in heat last week and I was exhausted the whole time, to the point that I felt drunk when I went to the store Saturday morning. It was kind of funny because my mom had been hypocritically side-eying my picking up 5% abv cocktails in a can the day before, but also: not pleasant. I'm slowly recovering from that, but the nightmares aren't helping. Neither are the bouts of depression.

-

I've been experimenting with extremely low-grade alcohol for a couple of weeks -- and by low I mean "I don't think this counts as breaking sobriety," because the tipsiest I've felt has been 'unexpectedly happy,' twice -- to see how my body takes to it now it's been off it for three years, and also so I could try a drink I saw at Primaprix that looked right up my alley except for the 5% abv. It was delicious. They no longer stock it, of course. More chatter about this. )

-

Three episodes behind on The Pitt, caught up on 9-1-1 (Buck ;__;) and decided to finish 9-1-1 Lone Star for some reason. I have two episodes left and I assume they're gonna make me cry again so I've been putting it off a bit. This show is a telenovela. For all the NDEs in 9-1-1, at least you can kind of assume things will turn out okay, with one glaring exception. Season 4 of Lone Star was just melodramatic hit after hit, and Judd has been depressing in season 5. Carlos, too, to some extent. I do still really love Nancy and Marjan though. And TK and Carlos's relationship. And Paul. Ramble/rant, with spoilers. )

Anyway. I am trying to convince my brain mice to let me do things. I just wanna make maps and edit pictures and the mice are like, "what's that? We don't know how to open an editor suddenly." I'm halfway through Trespasser on Dragon Age: Inquisition, where I am missing most of the trophies for some reason? I'm pretty sure I did the DLC last time, but who knows. It was 2020. I accidentally locked myself out of a bunch of companion quests, but I'm just not putting myself through this game again. It would be so goddamn replayable if combat wasn't so tedious. I have it on easy! It should not take this long to defeat a bunch of bandits! At this point if they had an accessibility 'one-shot enemies' option I would take it. Goddamn. Let me shoot them in the head. Let me shoot them dead in the head, specifically. At least Veilguard let me aim.

I'm very pleased I made a guy and experienced the Dorian romance, though. He is just delightful.

Just finished: Nothing.

Currently reading: Here Where We Live Is Our Country by Molly Crabapple. This is a weirdly dense book—like, not in terms of content but in terms of typography where it turns out to be much longer than it looks. So it will take awhile and I'll no doubt have very scattered thoughts on it. I'm up to a weird point just before WWII where Piłsudski has done a coup in Poland and provided some kind of respite for the Bund there, while Molly's great-great grandfather Sam is in the US, trying to make it as an artist. The revolution in Russia has almost immediately turned sour. The Zionist movement is ascendant in Eastern Europe but still looked on as profoundly unserious by the Bundist majority, who are like, "you're going to be farmers in the desert? Good luck with that and also fuck you."

This is just such an important book, right now in our history with what was once the biggest current of socialist thought in Europe being whittled down to a few of us hobbyists in 2026. It's not just hereness, but a lineage that I think most Ashkenazi Jews are lacking, even ones like me who know a fair bit about the Bund. The majority of Jews in the West have accepted the Devil's bargain of whiteness: give up your culture for safety and assimilation into the power structure, sure celebrate your holidays but now you're part of the dominant culture. There have been times, watching the livestreamed genocide of Gaza, that I have thought, "well, can I just not be Jewish anymore? I want no part of it, I want to wash my hands of it, I cannot participate if this is what most of us feel is okay," but you can't, can you? I mean you can but not in any meaningful way that helps even a single person. It's better to have a history, to know why and how that history has been suppressed, not because of some nostalgia or historical LARPing but because of the whole "first as tragedy, then as farce" of it all.

Which is to say that this book is giving me a lot of feels. You should read it, probably.

2026/059: A Legacy of Spies — John Le Carré

...how much of our human feeling can we dispense with in the name of freedom, would you say, before we cease to feel either human or free? [loc. 3719]

Published in 2017, and very much a post-Brexit novel: at one point Smiley says to Peter Guillam "was it all for England, then? Of course it was... But whose England? Which England? England all alone, a citizen of nowhere? I'm a European."

Told from Peter Guillam's point of view: he's an old man now, retired to his family's farm in Brittany, but he's called back to London to explain his actions during Operation WindfallRead more... )

and her excuse is "Your father and I both agreed that it was best to raise you away from my wealthy-but-toxic family, whom I was returning to". And having met the protagonist's half-siblings, I can't say that this was wrong - but what, she just loved him so much more than her younger two that she had with her new, richer, more socially acceptable husband? No matter how you look at it, she's not exactly winning the mother of the year award.

Why This Must Be Read: A well-known classic, but apparently never reccd here before. Told from Rodney's POV, in which he elects to use alien tech for a temporary sex change as only women can access the stored artifacts of a matriarchal culture. John is moderately thrown by this, especially when Rodney commandeers him to test drive Rodney's new body sexually. Which goes less ideally than it might due to John being secretly way up there on the Kinsey scale. Rodney's perspective is funny, self-involved and perceptive all at once as he figures out what the hell is up with John, and of course, once he does and they're back home with Rodney male again, it's incendiary. Brilliantly written, and very hot.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Hello, Hello!

We still have one outstanding assignment that needs to be filled before the collection can open, and it appears that this one will need slightly more time than our current reveals date. In the best interest of not over promising, I've pushed our reveals date to Saturday, April 25th, at 10pm ET. All works should be in 24 hours prior to the reveals deadline, and I should be able to announce the all clear at that point.

  • I am now 10 chapters into The Fellowship of the Ring (via audiobook), here are my journal pages on it. I'm a full month behind the Shelved by Genre (podcast) pace, and a lot of the things that are being discussed go right over my head anyway, but I'm enjoying having the readalong experience.

  • Some photos I took this month: 4 photos of flowers + 1 of a magnificent chicken that I passed by on the small residential road that I privately think of as "the chicken path". I'm trying to be better at ID-ing plants but it's not really going well.

  • I'm at the part of Legend of Mana where I have gotten the Sword of Mana artifact? But I still have so many quests left? Even though I totally messed up the artifact placements and have been locked out of a bunch of other quests? Shoutout to this beautifully designed Legend of Mana fansite + walkthrough which is so neatly organized and ad-free. Without its step-by-step dungeon guides I would have dropped this game within 5 hours and left too many quests unfinished because I can't be bothered to explore from place to place.

  • Just set up a personal fantranslation site (halfxin.bearblog.dev) for organizing old works--just audiodrama clips and fancomics for now. I'm not fannishly active in any capacity anymore, I just like clean websites.

I want new yarn. I have so many ideas, including for types of crochet I haven't tried before. But I still have so much of my stash to get through. I have so many ideas for what to do with it and yet. And yet, and yet... Analysis paralysis is a real killer.

Honestly, I'm not sure what's holding me back more: Wanting to make sure I do justice to my good yarn or worrying over having to buy more cheap yarn I don't want to be able to finish a project I misjudged.

Even things I'm unequivocally excited to work on feel lesser in the moment because of the rest of it weighing on the back of my mind. Annoying, tbh.

    1. Today was my first day back at work at the office. Lots of meetings and not a lot else, but since I did all my catching up yesterday, that was fine. I'm planning to work from home tomorrow (and maybe Thursday?).

    2. I asked Carla to make hummus for me today while I was at work, since I usually make some on the weekend to have for weekday lunches but hadn't gotten to it, and she did make it for me, but also first mistakenly opened a can of pinto beans instead of chickpeas, so she made refried beans and we had that with some more tacos for dinner as there's still plenty of carnitas and fresh tortillas from yesterday, and they were both delicious and the perfect amount for two servings. (Though we still have more taco fixings, so if there had been more, we could have finished them up later this week.)

    3. There was a decent chance of rain today but it pretty much didn't rain. No rain at all in Gardena where I was, and Carla said there was a little dampness on the ground mid day but that was it. I really have had enough to rain for now, so I'm glad.

    4. I spotted Tuxie in an unusual place the other day (in the neighbors' front yard). He seemed startled to see me, too, lol.

I am posting from the computer before my present one -- this one dates from the early 2000s, and is a bit slow. My good 2019 computer is in the shop getting a new keyboard -- apparently when one key is busted all of them are and the entire top of the laptop gets replaced. It's the down arrow that didn't work.

And because of that I have about 10 days either with only my phone (I will not describe going through 100+ new emails there; it is tedious) or this elderly one that I have purposely kept on an older operating system because this lappie has really excellent older software that simply doesn't work on the more recent op systems. So I am relaxing, watching old stored movies (Skyfall, anyone?) and doing offline sorting of books and papers and so on.

ETA: The guy at the shop said I could have them do the work in-house, for about 10 days, or they could send it to another shop where they would mail it back after about 5 days. I do not trust the current postmaster, or his cuts to service, or the possibility that it would end up sitting on a shelf somewhere and not come back, so I agreed to the 10 days or so.

I'm also feeling the losses, and letting myself feel them and letting them go through me instead of "braving it out" or trying to ignore them and having everything get worse later. I don't want worse later; now is enough. I can bear now. I am remembering so many little things, and big things, aond old things and it all just works.

It also means I'm sleeping a lot, around my meds schedule, which is less easy than it sounds. Basically, I have a BP pill and a blood thinner, each of which needs to be taken 2x a day about 12 hours apart, but not at the same time because the stress on my heart is too much. So I am carefully scheduling the one for 9 am and pm and the other for 10-11 am and pm, and that is working. Otherwise my heart bangs until it wakes me up, which is not fun.

I'm also handspinning silk roving in various colors; it's one of my favorite things to do while watching tv, because looking from the work in my hands to the set across the room keeps my eyes from getting stuck at the shorter distance. I did maybe 15 yards, three ply, today, which is 45 yards of single ply. You do the 3-ply by putting a big slipknot loop into the end of it, then continue to loop through the loop and twirl the spindle in the opposite direction of the single ply's twist. The result is useful, not so thin that it falls apart, and looks good. I am thinking of crocheting small keepsake bags from them.

That's about what's happening here, give or take a freeze warning or hearing the fox calling in the park half a block away late at night. I'm glad of that fox and its kin; they are welcome to come to my yard to eat mice whenever they wish.

    why not here

Jinwoo Park, Oxford Soju Club (2025): character-centric spy thriller from a Canadian publisher, which I picked up while glancing at a different library epub (by someone who blurbed Soju Club). Subject line is from ch. 5.

If you know which Korean surnames are border-straddlers, you'll find them well represented amongst Soju Club's associates, either directly or via central-casting allusions to kpop/kdrama stars' names (including the voice actress for Meitantei Conan's Korean dub, if I'm not mistaken). One character totes around a copy of The Golden Compass, thus named. The Oxford around Soju Club and another pub is barely sketched in, a liminal space for crossings, as though to assert that there's no need for the Arctic; southern England is unlikely enough.

Soju Club is the type of novel that, while layering secret-handshake refs that most readers wouldn't see (I caught the doublings related to Sacheon in Yeongnam, but I know I've missed a bunch), tries suggesting that it doesn't matter that gyopo Park did his homework for those resonances and evocations as though preparing for a Suneung he never took. If you catch the Korean bits, you won't catch the UK-related or NorAm-related ones.

All you need are the sense that you won't catch everything Park has learned while touring himself out of some boxes, and the fact that he did a master's at Oxford and then some writing/managing for computer games. The latter furnishes the novel's vignette-driven scrambled sequence: turn the page or tap the screen to find the next puzzle-segment.

I think that Park, with this debut novel, doesn't imagine the author to be dead.

    Chapter 5:
After running away, Sarasa makes her way to Suou City (the Red King's home base) but there's a checkpoint. A tour for Madam Butterfly is going through and helps her get in. One of them is a crossdressing Ageha (looking absolutely stunning).

A man named Shidou helped Sarasa out but he saw something on Sarasa's neck that caught his attention.

Shidou: "You know...it has always been my dream to die for you."
Shuri: "...Live for me. I'd appreciate that more."

Ohh so Shuri gave a little bag with olive seeds in it that he got from Shidou to Sarasa, that's why he noticed.

Aww Ageha's owl had a family, the chicks are sooo cute!!! Sarasa took in the runt, I hope it'll be okay...

Ageha was a slave? I get the feeling Ageha isn't going to make it through this somehow, like Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi.

Ironic that Sarasa is taking advice on getting her revenge from Shidou who is a close friend of Shuri and that the words of advice are from Shuri himself who she wants revenge on.

Ack, Shidou is the son of the family that owned Ageha. He's Shuri's cousin.

WTF, Mario said he knew Tatara, but even if he listened in on Ageha and Sarasa they didn't mention that name, right??

Chapter 6: They sent Sarasa to the Kanmon Tunnel aka the tunnel to hell to escape...

Geeeze poor Sarasa this is like Snow White in the forest but worse. At least the baby owl Shinbashi got some worms.

Nagi was such a good teacher to Sarasa.

So the 'Lion King' sent prisoners to this cave and one was from Suzaku and was waiting for 'Tatara'!

Man I hope she doesn't lose Yato, but I can see it happening as 'letting go of Tatara'.

    Chapter 7:
Sarasa and Yato made it out and he's protecting her. 🥲

Lol at the note on Shuri: "If you think he's actually a nice guy deep inside...you're naive."

Yato is finally letting her ride! ...I bet Shuri kills him. *steels self*

Aw Kaku is alive and looking for her. 🥲

Kazan has been keeping Sarasa's mom with him?

Noo Ageha is being tortured. 😭

I loved Ageha's words to Shuri but I don't want him to die. :/

Sarasa has her first companion in Hayato, a descendant of Suzaku.

What Shido did to that boy and his mom was evil. My rage in my heart at Shuri and Shido is at an all time high.

Chapter 8: Shidou has a fiancee.

Hisha appeared before Sarasa. Nagi and the others are okay. They are going to see The Red Army's battleship.

Shuri has the mark of a slave on his back like Ageha. :O

Hot Springs reunion again. Sarasa unknowingly saving her enemy and giving too much away about Nagi.

So a prophet said that Shuri would bring misfortune to his father, who proceeded to brand him as a baby. Geezus. "This is not my son, this is my slave." Shidou's father raised him.

Sakurajima and Suzaku sank into the sea.

I logged off yesterday around 4:30 and started the process of making whipped ganache, and as per usual, the amount of time it takes to get the temperature of the ganache down to 75°F is RIDICULOUS even when I put the bowl on the window sill with the window open (there is a screen) and a cold breeze coming in. I guess the one good part about how long it took was that I was able to make and eat dinner in the middle of it, so I didn't have to do the whole thing hungry. Then I loaded those dishes into the dishwasher and started separating eggs to make vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. And got some yolk in with the whites so had to start over. And then cracked an egg and it was frozen, so unusable for my purposes.

I did eventually get 4 egg whites in a bowl with a cup of sugar and set it over the pot of simmering water so I could whisk it until it heated to 160°F because aside from my own fear of salmonella, the whole point here was to celebrate my pregnant co-worker so I absolutely needed to make sure everything was safe. It's always amazing to me how they double in size as you whisk and heat them and eventually they hit the temp, so I whipped them into stiff peaks (not by hand), which took about twice the amount of time it normally does (physics! always working against me!), but did eventually happen. All was well as I added in the butter, but then I added the vanilla bean paste (gotta have the specks!) and it curdled. So I had to reheat it to melting, chill it, and whip it while adding another 1/4 cup of butter, but it did eventually whip up beautifully. Both frostings piped like a dream, too, since they were not cold. Pics are here. And they were much appreciated by my co-workers! At the end of the day, when I went into the lunchroom to put the leftovers in the fridge, I found someone packing them up to take home. She was like, did you want them? And I was like, no, I was just going to put them in the fridge for tomorrow. I'm pretty sure she did not know I was the person who made them, but that's okay.

Work itself was fine - we spent most of our team meeting eating cupcakes while everyone else talked about their cats - but I was 3/4 of the way there this morning when I realized I'd left my ID badge in my old bag (I got a new bag for work recently, and used it for the first time today, and I think I like it. It is quite large but the strap is the perfect length for a large crossbody, imo), but thankfully they have guest ID cards so I was able to go about my day without interruption. I did make myself a note to remember my ID card next month when I go in. (well, unless there is a LIRR strike, but there probably won't be.)

    Today's poem:

    The Thing Is

to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
    and everything you've held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
    more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you down like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
    I will love you, again.

Any of my reviews from 2025 that people especially liked?

in 2012 (!) I posted about helping to harvest potatoes at the Interfaith garden
    https://lauradi7dw.dreamwidth.org/318368.html

Today I planted potatoes in about the same place. The procedure is pretty simple - dig a trench, cut actual potatoes (with sprouts if possible), put the halves cut side down in the trench about 10" apart, cover with some (not all) of the dirt that came from the trench. I was interested to learn that different potato varieties have different growing duration, so there are three rows that will mature at different times.
It was easier than harvesting them, and easier than weeding, which I don't like doing anyway, because I have the emotional thought that if a non-invasive plant wants to grow, who am I to disagree? I am more ruthless about invasives.

As I worked I was thinking about the kdrama "The Potato Lab," following researchers at a potato research lab. I wouldn't really recommend spending your time on it, but while some of the characters were interesting, while I was watching it I gradually found myself mostly engaged in worrying about the potatoes themselves - there was a storm that harmed the greenhouse. The corporation that funded the research was going to pull out. Stuff like that.

MS. KROGER: Oh, so you live with another woman.
BUFFY: Oh! Oh, it's not a, a gay thing, you know, I mean, well...
Ms. Kroger picks up a plastic baggie containing some herbs.
BUFFY: ...she's gay, but, but we don't ... gay. Not that there's anything - (notices Ms. Kroger looking at the herb) Oh! Wrong with... (rushes over) You know, I know what that looks like, but I, I swear, it's not ... what it looks like. (Ms. Kroger looking shocked) It's *magic* weed.
Buffy grabs the plastic bag from Ms. Kroger and tosses it back in the box.
    BUFFY: It's not mine.

So evidently any caffeine after 4 pm results in a nuit blanche. In spite of early-for-me rising yesterday, I was wide awake past midnight. Gave it darkness and beanbags and the old college try, but no luck. After an hour I gave up, turned on the light, and read Zen Cho's The Terracotta Bride until a quarter to four. Turned off light, eventually drifted off, and was awake at nine. And awake awake. So today has been something of a bust with every joint aching into the bargain. I miss the days when I could fall asleep just reading in bed. This I suppose is how the insomnia of old age works for me.

Reading on through the Phaedo, I am not impressed by Socrates' argument that everything arises from its opposite and that life must come from death.

Now to her lap the incestuous Earth
The son she bore has ta'en
And other sons she brings to birth
    But not my friend again.

Socrates believes in a soul, an ego, that simply cycles through the cycles while I semi-Buddhistically think that's nonsense. There is no I in Buddhism-- though how then do people remember 'their' past lives? However I'm with Stoppard's Guildenstern: Death is not anything. Death is not. It's the absence of presence, nothing more. A gap you can't see, and when the wind blows through it, it makes no sound.
