Author's summary: There were things the government didn’t teach soldiers in boot camp.
Why This Must Be Read: This is an amazing, beautifully written fic by ladiflowdi that takes my breath away every time I read it! It’s so hot and emotional and just perfect! It captures a deeply intimate moment between John and Rodney, seen through Sam's eyes, and you can’t help but share in her jealousy as she secretly observes the perfect fulfillment, the perfect completion—the perfect picture of love.

Apr. 23rd, 2026 07:34 pmI did manage to cut some of the dead and dried vines off the fence closer to the house, but my back was in conniptions by that point. Came inside and stretched, and shortly thereafter tackled the things growing in the front yard. This was much antsier because the footing in front is so uneven, what with the invasive species Eglish ivy. I begin to think boat shoes ie my New Balances, are maybe not the best footware for this, though I can't think what is. Something lighter and flatter that registers the ground underfoot better. But again, sawed down some quite thick stems leaving only the root knots, handy for tripping over should you be wading about my front lawn. Then took out some of the dead wood from the hedge, and finally sawed through the branches of the very dead pine in the corner of the planter. Sawing all this wood to an acceptable length for the garbage guys and tying it up as you're supposed to will be a pain, but sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
I expect to be crippled tomorrow and might try for a massage. Can only hope this counts as exercise and calorie burning.

READ: Romans 15:5-7
Accept one another . . . to bring praise to God. Romans 15:7
Lillian Colón, who grew up in an orphanage, beat out four hundred dancers to win a coveted spot on a world-renowned dance team. She performed with that group, with its tightly ordered synchronized choreography, until her mid-forties. Now teaching dance at age seventy, she imparts to students her greatest lesson from precision artistry: Work together. “On and off the stage, our lives are deeply intertwined,” she said, “and we all fare better when we support and care for one another.”
The apostle Paul knew the importance of this principle. Harmony in Christ points praise to its true purpose—glorifying God. Paul taught this lesson to believers in Rome, both Jewish and gentile, to encourage their unity. “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had,” he wrote (Romans 15:5). This was “so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 6).
Competing voices won’t produce this result. Joining together to praise God, with no one person or group discounting another, gives unity in Christ its true purpose. “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you,” wrote Paul, “in order to bring praise to God” (v. 7). When we seek God’s help to do this, He inspires our common voice as we step together and give Him glory.
— Patricia Raybon
Whose voice can you join in praise to God? How can you prioritize unified praise?
Please open my heart, dear God, to unified praise with others.

OTW Finance: 2026 Budget
Apr. 23rd, 2026 11:13 pmThrough the last year, the OTW Finance team has continued to ensure that the organization’s bills are paid, tax returns filed, and standard accounting procedures met. Preparation for the 2025 audit of financial statements is currently ongoing!
The team has also been diligently working to meet the OTW’s 2026 needs, and is proud to present to you this year’s budget (access the 2026 budget spreadsheet for more detailed information):
2026 Expenses

Archive of Our Own (AO3)

- US$58,283.93 spent so far out of US$850,040.85 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- 71.2% of the OTW’s expenses go towards maintaining AO3. This includes the bulk of our server expenses—both new purchases and ongoing colocation and maintenance—website performance monitoring tools, and various systems-related licenses, as well as costs highlighted below (access all program expenses).
- This year’s projected AO3 expenses also include US$500,000 to purchase new database servers, as well as US$60,000 for new firewalls and routers and US$35,000 in server related equipment to increase the capacity of existing servers to handle expected site traffic growth through the year.
Open Doors

- US$1,957.84 spent so far out of US$8,731.05 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- Open Doors’ expenses consist of hosting, backup, and domain costs for imported fanwork archives, as well as an allocated share of various OTW-wide productivity tools (access all program expenses).
Transformative Works and Cultures

- US$317.00 spent so far out of US$6,512.63 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- Transformative Works and Cultures‘ expenses are the journal’s website hosting, publishing, and storage fees, as well as an allocated share of various OTW-wide productivity tools (access all program expenses).
- Additionally, in 2024, the University of Amsterdam provided €1,000 (US$1,061) to Transformative Works and Cultures, which will be used to help fund the Fans of Color Research Prize. One prize was awarded in 2025.
Fanlore

- US$2,228.24 spent so far out of US$46,688.30 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- Fanlore’s expenses are its share of allocated server hardware, maintenance and colocation costs, as well as its portion of various OTW-wide productivity tools (access all program expenses).
Legal Advocacy

- US$0 spent so far out of US$2,927.92 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- Legal’s expenses consist of registration fees for conferences and hearings and funds set aside for legal filings if necessary, as well as an allocated share of OTW-wide productivity tools (access all program expenses).
Fundraising and Development

- US$22,123.05 spent so far out of US$136,004.81 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- Our fundraising and development expenses consist of transaction fees charged by our third-party payment processors for each donation, thank-you gift purchases and shipping, outreach work by volunteers at various fan conventions, and the tools used to host the OTW’s membership database and track communications with donors and potential donors, as well as an allocated share of OTW-wide productivity tools (access fundraising expenses).
Administration

- US$32,837.40 spent so far out of US$144,203.13 total this year, as of March 31, 2026.
- The OTW’s administrative expenses include hosting for our website, trademarks, domains, insurance, tax filing, and annual financial statement audits, as well as productivity, management, and accounting tools (access all admin expenses).
2026 Revenue

- The OTW is entirely supported by your donations—thank you for your generosity!
- We receive a significant portion of our donations each year in the April and October fundraising drives, which together will account for about 36.2% of our income in 2026. We also receive donations via employer matching programs, royalties, and PayPal Giving Fund, which administers donations from programs like Humble Bundle and eBay for Charity. If you’d like to support us while making purchases on those websites, please select the Organization for Transformative Works as your charity of choice!
- Thanks to your generosity in previous years, we have a healthy amount of money in our reserves, which we can use to pay for larger than usual purchases and keep on hand for legal contingencies. As mentioned previously, we plan to continue to upgrade the capacity of AO3’s servers, which significantly increases server equipment and server hosting expenses. The growth of AO3 and other projects of the OTW also requires more volunteers and administrative support, further increasing expenses. The budget spreadsheet projects a withdrawal of US$375,000 from reserves to cover the costs that exceed the amount of revenue projected to be received this year. This amount may be withdrawn as needed during the year.
- US$147,393.22 received so far (as of March 31, 2026) and US$830,450.00 projected to be received by the end of the year.

Got questions?
If you have any questions about the budget or the OTW’s finances, please contact the Finance committee. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

Apr. 23rd, 2026 07:22 pmBut thy eternal summer shall not fade
Apr. 23rd, 2026 06:45 pmSonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
By William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

I was all excited that it's Thursday, thinking about how there'd be a new episode of The Pitt until I remembered, alas, that there will be no new episodes until next January. Sigh.
I keep meaning to post my thoughts here and not doing it, so in brief, my thoughts on the season 2 finale of The Pitt: ( spoilers )
I guess this sounds like I had a lot of complaints but I really loved this season - I just thought the writing fell down a little sometimes, for some characters.

Chapter 172: The cover! ☺️
I don't know why but I wasn't expecting Kiryuu's house to be so traditional.
Suou: "Sakura-kun's too busy being nervous about going to a friend's home for the first time. He hasn't even registered the big house yet."
Sakura stop being cute for one second challenge failed. 🤣
Kiryuu has his own little house outside of the main house because he doesn't like them.
Whoa, a mini Sakura backstory flashback?! Ah, no wonder he's used to living in a small/spare space...
Chapter 173-174:

I'm torn between excitement at getting Kiryuu backstory and rage at his father. Sakura literally had to be held back from confronting him.
Lmao of course Tsugeura is so honest he has to blurt out that that they heard everything.
Chapter 175: Sakura showed Kiryuu where Akari works and they saw that the icky guy was there too, so they followed him and yep he's planning something nasty.
Kiryuu and Akari talk and Akari plans on moving out, good for her. Kiryuu realizes how stupid he's been assuming things, not that he knew what she was doing in secret until now. I hope he follows her path someday.
Chapter 176: Aww I'm so happy we get Sakura and Kiryuu one on one interaction like this. "Now I get to fight alongside you, just the two of us. It's an honor, Sakura-chan."
I hope Sakura gives Kiryuu the pillow after this.
Shishitouren Special: Wanijima is in the manga at last! Wanijima leaving definitely contributed to Chouji's change. I need to catch up on the side story in the manga.
Band AU illustration!! Damn, Sakura's singing his heart out. X'D

To recap the description,
"Penric takes a chance…
Two intractable problems are brought to the door of sorcerer Learned Penric of Vilnoc and his Temple demon Desdemona. Cinar Camurat, a mutilated Cedonian cavalry captain, has traveled two thousand sea miles to Penric for aid. Iva of Bita, a secret hedge sorceress, lies dying in her Orban hill village, and wants no aid at all.
Penric and Desdemona know well the hazards of medicine and magic, but their greatest puzzle may lodge in the tangle of hopes and fears in human and demonic hearts."

intro
Apr. 23rd, 2026 09:22 pmI'm a person who loves to read but doesn't do it as much as they'd like. But I'm trying to read 12 books this year, let's see how it goes! I just finished the first volume of the Book of Dust trilogy by Philip Pullman and and am now reading the third Emily Wilde book, Compendium of Lost Tales. I've been very much into fantasy and (queer) dark academia lately.
Some of my favourite books are His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix and The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland. I really wish Douglas Coupland hadn't posted this dumb-as-fuck fanboy article about Melon Husk a few years ago, he used to be one of my favourite authors. But I still love The Gum Thief with all my heart and re-read it every other year or so.
Happy to be here and yap about books :)
PS: Is it even OK to post intros? If not please let me know.

Apr. 23rd, 2026 02:25 pmIn botany, this lacks the negative connotations, and it is used heavily to describe things as diverse as tree bark, fruit, and squashes.
History
Apr. 23rd, 2026 01:44 pmIn 1997, scientists discovered this small chamber within a much larger complex cave system. They’ve found other human occupation sites within it, but The Pit of Bones was no place for the living. To date, more than 50,000 partially fossilized bones have been collected. These bones include more than 6500 belonging to an ancient hominid species, in addition to bones of over 160 individuals of an extinct species of cave bear, a panther, lynxes, canines, and small mammals.
In addition to some nice details and diagrams of the actual science, there is an amusing discussion of how badly this fits the "young Earth creationism" fantasy.
Check-In Post - April 23rd 2026
Apr. 23rd, 2026 07:45 pmHello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.
Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?
There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.
This Week's Question: Does your crafting change with the seasons, certain crafts at certain times of the year?
If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.
I now declare this Check-In OPEN!
Birdfeeding
Apr. 23rd, 2026 01:29 pmI fed the birds. I've seen a few house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I took some pictures around the yard.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I refilled potting soil into the hollow logs at the front of the log garden. Then I planted a 4-pack of white impatiens in the holes.
I put the flats of plants outside to get some sun.
I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a male cardinal.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I watered the impatiens and flats of plants.
I've seen a starling at the hopper feeder.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I potted up four green sweet basil plants and one purple ruffles basil, then watered them.
I've seen a fox squirrel at the hopper feeder.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- We hauled the new bag of grass seed out of the car.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I sowed grass seed in the big bare patch at the west edge of the south lot.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- We hauled out the tape hose and the new sprinkler head. There is not enough hose to reach the grass patch, and with the low water pressure that we have, the spray only covers about 6 feet wide. *sigh*
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I planted a small trough pot with orange mint, mojito mint, and apple mint. There is room for one more mint there.
EDIT 4/23/26 -- I did more work around the patio.
I watered the grass patch using the watering can.
As it is now dark, I am done for the night.
Three Pieces Of Meta M Found Recently That They Like

And finally, Haruka Isn't Autistic-Coded – He Has an Intellectual Disability (And Why That Matters), a Milgram meta that I wish I could force everyone in the fandom to read. This came out before Trial 3, but it has overall aged wonderfully in spite of that.

Then entering various details, scanning various documents to a satisfactory quality (don't ask, just don't ask, I have done screaming now, thanks), and taking a selfie.

Do we even wish to detain ourselves over Michael Billington's ranking of the works of the Bard? I pretty much Dorothy Parkered, as much as one can with a newspaper, when I saw he had not only put Much Ado 20th out of 35, but considers B&B the subplot.
Light the barbecue in the marketplace, I have a heart to eat there!

Though it is hardly anywhere near the same class for utter crassness of this - honestly, why are these people? A tourist has been charged after allegedly climbing a colossal marble statue in Florence to touch its genitals for a pre-wedding prank.

Apr. 23rd, 2026 05:11 pm(Brief outline: Robby, otherwise Dr Michael Robinavitch, is a warm, scathing, compassionate soul who runs an emergency department in Pittsburgh, it's an ensemble cast of interns, resident doctors, patients, nurses and others and Robby is the keystone of it all in a tired, mentally ill kind of a way. Each episode of the show covers an hour, so the entire season covers a single shift. It's very good. Also Robby is played by Noah Wyle - and, as the show's executive producers lost a litigation against the IP-holders for ER, he is emphatically not John Carter. I love this. Robby feels, and is, beautifully imagined: a working-class Jewish man, who wears a magen David necklace, all because Carter was a WASP with a trust fund.)
I also love Trinity Santos, a brilliant lovely Filipina asshole of a lesbian, and Jack Abbot, who is Robby's friend and also mirror image - being to the night shift what Robby is the day - and also fascinating for himself. He's a former MASH combat medic which is what decided me for sure that the show deliberately draws on its predecessor. The Pitt isn't a sitcom, but it has the warmth MASH had; and Abbot, who is a lower-leg amputee, embodies some of its ambivalence. (And! In s2 they have someone deliver Henry Blake's "young men die" speech, with the same blocking as the original. I love it.)
Anyway I love this show. It is so rich and funny and so fucking human, all the damn time. Robby's PTSD is from covid, and his nightmares are of full PPE - and I was like, okay, do I want to watch this. Robby has PTSD from treating covid patients but my dad died from treating covid patients. But I did want to watch it, because it takes what it does seriously. I want to write a fic, about Robby and ( s2 spoiler ), and I also want it to be a daemon AU, because I am insane. I haven't written anything good in a year and like I said I am insane. Maybe I should just ask people to give me fic prompts.

Apr. 23rd, 2026 04:44 pmA Room above a Shop by Anthony Shapland (2025). I struggle to get on with literary prose. I do like prose for its own sake; I read fiction first for the story, but language certainly isn't just a vehicle for telling the story and beautiful, elegant prose can add a lot to a book and indeed to a story; but I don't want to feel like the author is putting prose ahead of telling the story or—especially—that I'm having to work to get to the story through the prose. So I'm not sure how to feel about this book. The story is that of a relationship between two men, known only by their initials M and B, in the Welsh Valleys in the 1980s; M owns the local ironmonger's shop, he gives B a job there, they live together in the single room above the shop—hence the title—which becomes a sort of symbolic image of the private relationship they have to keep secret from the world to which they're simply colleagues. It is very much a literary book, and I got annoyed with the prose, which I found difficult to interpret at points (a flexible approach to sentence construction in which 'sentences' don't necessarily have a verb, a habit of using nouns and adjectives as verbs and an aversion to the definite and indefinite articles (by which one might otherwise identify which words are nouns) are not a good combination for making it easy to interpret sentence structure). But the style—in how spare it is and how carefully-constructed, if not in how ungrammatical—creates an impression, and it's memorable, and I can nevertheless see that at least some things about it are good, thoughtful choices that serve the story rather than pointlessly obscuring it, and the book wouldn't be as effective a book as it is if it was written in the more straightforward way I prefer. The spareness and fluidity of the prose suit the simplicity and significance of the events and emotions. Even that rather silly gimmick where the characters don't have proper names kind of emphasises the sense of hiddenness, the indirectness and intimacy at the same time with which we readers much approach the characters, the precariousness, uncertainty and specificity together. I also enjoyed the way Shapland sprinkles information about dates and time throughout the story rather than just giving us simple numbers, which was pleasing to my fandom timeline-constructing brain. I am not sure about the ending, but again, the way it's presented works.
The Story of a Governess by Margaret Oliphant (1891). I had a look through Oliphant's long bibliography for interesting titles and chose this—what'll she do with that favourite nineteenth-century theme, I thought? Well, the novel starts out sounding as though it's going to be a comic subversion of the 'poor oppressed governess' story, and I suppose the whole thing kind of is a parody of Jane Eyre in a sense, but what it eventually turns out to be is half romantic drama and half attempt at a sensation novel, and unfortunately the overall effect of both sides is that it doesn't work and it's really annoying. And the ending not only involves the heroine getting married again; not only does so in a way that's uncomfortably reminiscent of the worst aspect of Miss Marjoribanks; but comparing the two, one begins to get the impression that what Oliphant turns to when she's not writing the very good endings she's sometimes capable of is not only not good but really quite ugly indeed.
So this leaves me with the question, what next? I've read five of Oliphant's novels now; two of them are among the best Victorian novels I've ever read; one is very good; one is about two-thirds of a brilliant book that badly lets itself down towards the end; and one is kind of terrible. And she has, as I say, a long bibliography: how many more books like this am I willing to risk in the hope of finding another Kirsteen??

Apr. 23rd, 2026 08:18 amThere's a fairly broad mix of recent and older stuff, including Highlander: The Series and the Buffyverse, as well as across media types, that I think a lot of people might well enjoy.
However, looks like a washout for me, personally, as a writing opportunity. There are several books and movies that I could offer/request to pad out a sign-up slate, but nothing I'm personally sufficiently jazzed about the chance of to jump aboard. I should have made time to nominate The Legend of Zelda, Dungeons & Dragons (Cartoon, 1983-85), the characters I personally enjoy most in HL, and a few other things. Ah, well. Lesson learned again!
I'll keep an eye on for stories to read.
