I wrote to the King, asking him not to visit the United States as part of their celebration of 250 years of independence from the UK and our monarchs.

I have had a reply.

Sadly it is marked "Private and Confidential" so I cannot tell you what it said.

I wasn't really hoping for a reply and the King now knows how I feel.
I will just have to hope that he does the right thing.

The only previous time I wrote to the Palace, the Queen was overtaken by events:
Boris resigned whilst I was at the post box !

When I went up to bed last night, my Beast announced that the cat had peed in the bidet.

On the whole, I'm inclined to think that if Sable wishes to urinate somewhere in our bedroom suite, the bidet is about the best bet. The shower would also do, but then she'd get her feet wet and leave unwelcome little footprints everywhere.

On the other hand—why? Sable, why? You have a litter tray and an entire garden, which have between them sufficed for several years.

Sigh. Cat urine is very pungent, and the anti-urine spray is not much less unpleasant.

*

Still. I woke up with a horrendous cold this morning so I'm probably not getting the full, er, impact of the smell.

Discord sure proudly shot itself in the foot, didn't it? Alas, I don't have a copy of Death Stranding to fool their systems with, and I sure as hell am not forking over my ID to the government. So far, I signed up for Stoat, but I don't know which service is going to be the Next Big Thing yet. Remember when people signed up for Pillowfort and that ended up dead in the water? Yeeeeeeah. I hope this next migration will be more creative friendly, I have zero places to be motivated for building graphics and fanmixes. Sure, there's always Dreamwidth, but it's pretty quiet here, which sadly, nothing much I can do about. :(

Since I've been burnt out during the winter season, Three Sentence Ficathon has been a major help. I ended up having a lot of Moon RPG feelings so quite a number of fills are based on that game. ;; Then I took a break to do EAD Birthday Bash 2026, which was a lot of fun since I got to do silly paper plate art with markers. Everybody should read my Mouthwashing My Immortal masterpiece, buwahahahaha. It has to be the most fun I've had writing fic in a long time. XD With Birthday Bash over, I can catch up on 3SF and post all my fills. Sometimes even writing a single sentence is like pulling teeth, so if I actually manage to finish a prompt, it means a lot.

Animal Crossing 3.0 finally lets you store flowers and trees, which has been a major contributing factor to my burnout and inability to finish my island. And there's now slumber islands, so I can play with all the ideas I have bouncing around in my head without having to reset and do *everything* all over again. I can even build with friends! I just... have to find them, whoops. Gods I'm so lonely. ;; I learned how to find treasure islands so I'm basically catching up on everything and cataloging as many items as possible for building on dream islands. My museum is finally finished after forever. :P

Everyone has been shredding the latest Wuthering Heights movie, and dang, it looks as awful as it sounds. It's shitty enough that it makes me want to give the book another chance (and partly because some of Heathcliff's lines remind me of Buzzo being haunted by Lisa), but oof. The original book still employs one of my most Hated Tropes of All Time (The Misunderstanding, aka Person A conveniently hears just enough to believe the Person B hates them, and leaves right before Person B clarifies what they actually mean. I fucking despise it in Shrek, and I despise it everywhere else) And I don't know... a hated trope is like a turd in a otherwise fine bowl of cereal, you know? Once you know it's there, the turd overwhelms everything. D:

I'm still burnt out on everything, which really sucks. But at this point, I kind of have to push, you know?

2026/022: Boy, With Accidental Dinosaur — Ian McDonald

Under a high blue heaven, under the zealous sun, the kid and his dinosaur travel a hot, empty highway. [first line]

Tif (short for Latif) is an orphan of Arab descent, whose ambition is to become a buckaroo at one of the dino rodeos. The novella's opening presents him, with his dinosaur, on a journey: only gradually are we shown where he's going, and why -- and where he's come from.

This is the post-apocalyptic future of the country formerly known as the United States of America, now a dangerous wilderness of miliciano gangs, religious states, and aggressive Dominion raiders. Tif's parents were killed in the South Dakota purification. He's recently been sacked from Dino! Dino! after a Timursaur escaped and wreaked havoc.Read more... )

17. Chinese New Year begins today, and festivities continue until March 3rd – the year of the Fire Horse. What animal are you born under in Chinese astrology?

I'm a water dragon.
Animal: Dragon
Element: Water
Polarity: Yang
Personality traits: ambitious, intelligent, and energetic. The water tempers the fire in the dragon. I'm supposed to be more calm, and flexible.
Compatibility:dragons are traditionally most compatible with the Rat and monkey, while often clashing with the Dog. My hubby of 56 years is also the Water Dragon. Dang it he's not a rat or a monkey. 😂 we probably won't last. Hahaha.

What’s something you wish others knew about you?

Most people know this but just in case I'll mention it tonight. I write children books. I have four published.

1. The Well-Mannered Giant. This one is a favorite of mine.
2. Ride, Rocky, Ride. Very cute one.
3. I Thought I Saw a Lion.
4. A Calf named Boo. My 2 year old great-granddaughter walks around the house carrying it and recites some of it as she walks. She's so cute. And that makes me feel so lucky.

I have six that I'm working on right now. They are going to be so dang cute. Has anyone else written children books? Mine usually rhyme. My grandkids always loved that part.

I'm searching for airplane seat cushions.

I was hoping someone on my friend's list has tried a few cushions or has a favorite they'd recommend for long haul air travel? Like 12 hours and more air travel?

Living in Alaska long flights are the norm but I think I have to accept I'm growing older and traveling is painful.

I'd appreciate any and all advice! Sadly getting out of the plane and swimming the rest of the way won't work....

However does the week go speeding by so quickly? Just... NYOOM.

I have now worked 8 days in a row, and will hit 11 before I get a day off. I wasn't supposed to work on Saturday, and in fact had Many Things Planned, which got kiboshed when I got asked to come into work. Le Sigh. At least I got a few things done that have really needed doing, like cleaning the bathroom and changing my bed sheets. It wasn't even really necessary that I went in on Saturday, since I was scheduled for Sunday, but... argh.

Speaking of kiboshing things, last week I taught my therapist the word schlep. Apparently he has very limited Yiddish exposure, haha.

Shakes went well; we stopped right before the bear pursuit scene, because we want Allesy to get to enjoy it too since she's having a rough time of things right now. Everyone should get to experience "exeunt, pursued by a bear" at least once in their lives.

Happy stabby happened, and I checked in re: the referrals that are outstanding. They remain outstanding - the doctor's office said that they're taking at least a month right now, which is super sucky. You'd think that since one is for, y'know, a cardiologist, they might rush that one? But noooo. It would be nice to get in to see the hand specialist soon too, since I've run out of physio appointments until I get someone else to OK more visits. Then again, there hasn't seemed to be a whole lot more progress there, which is another reason I want to get in to the hand specialist soon. Would like less pain, thx.

Did not actually accomplish my goals this week, as I discovered that the P&L for Maureen is hella fucked, and I just... didn't with mom's stuff, heh. I did, however, read something not tax related! Huzzah! John Scalzi's Redshirts, which was a fun little book.

I finished yet another mini tax class thing, this one on military returns, so now I only have class to do before I level up again. Boss wants me to get to level 4 before next season, which apparently is gonna be doable considering I'm so close to 3 and will have... most of a year to finish 4. Once I hit 3, I can get small business certified. Level 4 brings advanced small business certification and Tax Pro Reviews, which is where the $$$ are, supposedly. Boss is also still making noises about training me to replace her when she retires, which... I don't know if I want to do that.

We finished watching The Day of Becoming You, which was a fun little het romcom with bodyswappping, which I suppose makes it inherently queer in a way. The actors did a pretty darn good job of playing each other, which when one was Zhang Xincheng, I expected. Not sure what our next show is going to be. Maybe we'll just do a few movies or something until after I get back from Escapade.

Speaking of! Escapade is this weekend! I Am Excite! I still haven't got my stuff together for the art show, but I got a few things mostly finished up today, and will hopefully have some non-raining time tomorrow before work to get some pieces out of the shed to list for the show. I'm not sure what to bring this year; I feel so out of the loop re: fandom and creativity and everything.

And tomorrow is LNY! I don't have anything to give anyone, but then again, I am not the boss so I don't have to! I'm hoping that I can make it to see Z1L's new movie after Escapade, but it would mean leaving pretty dang quickly, which is never ideal. I like seeing mah frends! But Z1L!

Goals for the Week: actually get everything prepped for the weekend (record hymns, art show, pack). survive the Big Bosses' visit tomorrow. try to get one of the two P&Ls actually finished, aiii.

Good Things: hummus. massive chocolate chocolate chunk cookies. rain at times I'm not driving.

I really wanna get my stuff out of Google Docs. I've been meaning to for a while anyway but especially with the AI push getting more aggressive, I hate having my work in there. I've opted out of everything I can but I still don't trust it.

This makes me miss Word Pad, ngl. It wasn't perfect-- I hated having to reset my margins every time-- but it was straightforward and had an inbuilt word counter. That's all I really need. I remember when I used to just have layers of folders for different collections of wips. Ah, those bygone days. I wouldn't mind something a bit more sophisticated, mind you. I've seen some programs that seem to have some really neat organizational options and I think something like that could be helpful with some of what I want to do. But I kinda just want something simple again.

Idk, do any of you guys use anything fancy for writing?

In War and Peace, I've read through Book Three and the unglamorous shambles of the battle of Austerlitz, and one theme that's stuck out to me is the sort of... grim bureaucracy(?) of war: the Russian-Austrian war council adopts a battle strategy that many of them know won't work, more or less because they want get out of this meeting and it's basically already in place/too late to change their approach; the commanders actually in the field are mostly worried about not being the person blamed for anything going wrong:

Not wishing to agree to Dolgorukov's demand to commence the action, and wishing to avert responsibility from himself, Prince Bagration proposed to Dolgorukov to send to inquire of the commander in chief. Bagration knew that as the distance between the two flanks was more than six miles, even if the messenger were not killed (which he very likely would be), and found the commander in chief (which would be very difficult), he would not be able to get back before evening.

The selected messenger ends up being Nikolai Rostov, who does not die (despite, among other incidents, finding himself directly in the path of a unit of hussars charging at full gallop, because of course he did) but does fumble the chance to meet his idol Emperor Alexander: "But as a youth in love trembles, is unnerved, and dares not utter the thoughts he has dreamed of for nights," he's too shy to approach him even though he literally has an excuse to do so?? On the other hand, Prince Andrei is personally taken prisoner by his hero, Napoleon, although at that point he's kind of over it, having had an ongoing near-death experience and an accompanying revelation about "the insignificance of greatness."

I ended up skipping ahead in Damon Runyon's Guys and Dolls and Other Writings to read "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" (1933), which was the main basis for the musical Guys & Dolls— it turns out that in the original story, there's no bet over whether gambler Sky Masterson can convince "missionary doll" Sarah Brown to join him on a day trip to Havana; he just falls for her on sight, tries to woo her by winning a guy's soul in a craps game to build up her mission, and then she catches on and comes marching in to gamble for his soul, which really ought to have made it into the musical but I've decided is how they make up off-stage between "Marry the Man Today" and the finale. (On the other hand, Sky's father's warning about not taking a bet from guys who "show you a nice brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is never broken" and "offer to bet you that the jack of spades will jump out of this deck and squirt cider in your ear," because "as sure as you do you are going to get an ear full of cider," is wholesale Runyon.) I agree with [personal profile] osprey_archer that someone really ought to write a crossover between Runyon's dim-witted gangsters and P.G. Wodehouse's dim-witted toffs, especially because the last few (as read in order) stories have in fact involved befriending random civilians: in one, a trio of American gangsters are hired to assassinate the king of a small European country, only to discover that the king is about six and really keen on Al Capone and baseball; in another, a group of tough guys running a ticket-scalping racket (maybe more surprised than I should have been to discover this was a thing since at least the 1930s??) adopt a nice little doll who got stood up at the Harvard vs. Yale football game, and learn to love the epic highs and lows of college football in the process.

1. So much rain today. When I went out for my walk this morning, it was just sprinkling very lightly (at times not at all) so that was fine, but I stopped at the store to get a few things and it was raining harder when I came out, then after I got home, it started really pouring and did not let up for hours. It did pause a few times, and I was able to get out to the garage to use the exercise machine and work on my puzzle, and then later I went on another walk myself and then one with Carla, and both times it started raining right after we got home. There's still supposed to be more rain for the next few days, but it looks like it'll mostly be happening overnight, so hopefully won't be too intrusive.

2. When I stopped at the store this morning, they were just putting out the fresh bakery baguettes we like, so I got one of those and some ham to make jambon buerre sandwiches for dinner. The only problem is I still had about half a mile to walk to get home, and the baguette is long and comes in a paper package. But! I had the smart idea of getting a couple plastic bags from the produce area and putting one on each end of the baguette, so it was protected from the rain.

3. I finished up another puzzle today, another 1000 piece one. This one was fun, but I don't think I'll want to do it again, so I'll probably put it out in the Little Free Library for someone else.

4. I cleaned the stove today. It's an old stove (based on the brown color, I assume it and the oven and the old fridge we no longer have were installed in the 60s by the people who owned the house before my parents) and is hard to just wipe clean after using because it has a setup similar to the top picture in the wikipedia page on gas stoves, but somehow even worse? Anyway, if you miss cleaning it after use just a few times, the grease build-up is impossible to take care of quickly and easily and it becomes a huge project of having to take the stovetop apart and scrub all the pieces. Definitely something to be done on a day when I don't have anything else to do, which is rare, so today was a perfect day. I had it on my to-do list but was tempted to put it off to some unknown time in the future, but since I was stuck inside with the rain, I just went ahead and did it, and while the stove will never look actually nice just due to age, it looks presentable and I feel really good about it.

I would like to get a new stove, but because we have a built-in stovetop and separate oven, it's not as simple as just buying a new one, and would require new countertops, and then if you're doing that, might as well replace the awful 45 year old flooring that's peeling up, and the cupboards are pretty dire, too, and it's a whole kitchen remodel, which is not only going to be expensive, but hard on the cats, so... (Someday, but not right now.)

5. Jasper was exploring the dryer the other day.

Today I photographed a little New Year's reunion dinner among the Mo Dao Zu Shi friends in Lego, and also quickly inked spring couplets for our door. I was able to make them recognizable on the first try, and although I still have no ability to write in semi-cursive, I judge my handwriting to be at least equivalent to a seven-year-old's.

(Li Can of EazyMandarin on youtube says "advanced" adult Chinese learners are about equivalent to a fifth- or sixth-grader in China, which I believe. The longer I learn Chinese the less I know. There was a time I considered myself as high as "upper intermediate," but now I am confidently "beginner" level. Perhaps not compared to other foreign adult learners, but compared to Chinese children I think I could make it in second grade. I wouldn't be top of the class, but they probably wouldn't kick me out.)

Relatedly, I only got through the first of my first grade textbooks last week, so I'll try to finish the second one this week. I did meet my recording goal, but writing and reading both fell off. Can't wait to see what happens this week.

Oh, winter sowing! Ha ha, I know nothing about this. Our local library is offering a workshop next week, but it's full, so I decided to learn on my own. I bought some bulbs, and then found out there's a reason you sow seeds, not bulbs. (Apparently winter sowing is a wet process, and bulbs rot. And also freeze.) So the bulbs are in the back of the refrigerator, and I have a collection of seeds that may or may not require cold stratification. I picked them from a list of "seeds that are good for winter sowing" at a seed website.

I also have some clear storage bins, because get this, we don't have milk jugs. Milk jugs are the greenhouses of choice due to their low cost and availability, but Marci and I drink milk from double-serving bottles (me) or not at all (her). When I tried to poke drainage and ventilation holes in the storage bins, I realized the difference between sturdy plastic and milk jugs. I went back to the internet for more advice.

A soldering iron or a drill, it said; neither of which I own.

Yet.

I'm finally feeling mostly human after being down with a cold for about a week; serves me right for being a judge at the regional science fair and exposing myself to all those middle school germ factories. Well, I read a lot, anyway.

Shroud by Adrien Tchaikovsky - first-contact with a very alien alien species on the tidally-locked moon of a gas giant. Earth is (FRTDNEATJ*) uninhabitable, humans have diaspora'ed in spaceships under the iron rule of corporations who cynically consider only a person's value to the bottom line, and the Special Projects team of the Garveneer is evaluating what resources can be extracted from the moon nicknamed "Shroud" when disaster (of course) strikes. The middle 3/5 of the book is a bizarre roadtrip through a strange frozen hell, as an engineer and an administrator (both women) must navigate their escape pod to a place where they might be able to call for rescue.

When I'd just started this book I said that it reminded me of Alien Clay, and it really does have a lot in common with that book, especially since they are both expressions of Tchaikovsky's One Weird Theme, i.e. "How can we see Other as Person?" He hits the same beats as he does in that and other books that are expressions of that theme (for example, the exploratory overture that is interpreted as hostility, the completely different methods of accomplishing the same task) but if it's the sort of thing you like, you will like this sort of thing. It also reminded me a bit of Dragon's Egg by Robert L. Forward, in the sense that it starts with an environment which is the opposite of anything humans would expect to find life on, and reasons out from physics and chemistry what life might be like in that environment. Finally, it (weirdly) reminded me of Summer in Orcus by T. Kingfisher, because the narrator, Juna Ceelander, feels that she's the worst possible person for the job (of survival, in this case); the engineer has a perfect skill-set for repairing the pod and interpreting the data they receive, but she's an administrator, she can do everyone's job a little, even if she can't do anybody's job as well as they can. But it turns out that it's important that she can do everyone's job a little; and it's also important that she can talk to the engineer, and stroke her ego when she's despairing, and not mind taking the blame for something she didn't do if it helps the engineer stay on task, and that's very Summer.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot!

[*] for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture

How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming by Mike Brown is what took me through most of the worst of my cold, as it's an easy-to-read micro-history-slash-memoir, which is one of my favorite nonfiction genres. Brown is the astronomer who discovered a number of objects in the Kuiper Belt, planetoids roughly the size of Pluto, which led to the inevitable question: are these all planets, too? If so, the solar system would have twelve or fifteen or more planets. If not - Pluto, as one of these objects, should not be considered a planet.

I really enjoyed the tour through the history of human discovery and conception of the solar system, and the development of astronomy in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He manages to outline the important aspects of esoteric technical issues without getting bogged down in detail, so it's very accessible to non-scientists. Interwoven in this was his own story, the story of his career in astronomy but also his marriage and the birth of his daughter. It's an engaging, chatty book, and one must forgive him for side-stepping the central question of "so what the heck is a planet, anyway?"

Don't Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk, which B had read a while back when he was on a Herman Wouk kick. I'd read Winds of War and War and Remembrance, and Marjorie Morningstar, but that was it, and I remembered he had said it reminded him a lot of our time in the Bahamas and Caribbean when we were living on our boat.

The best thing about this book is Wouk's sharp, funny writing - his paragraphs are things of beauty, his characters drawn crisply with description that always seems novel. The story itself is one disaster after another, as Norman Paperman, Broadway publicist, discovers that running a resort in paradise is, actually, hell. It's funny, but the kind of funny that you want to read peeking through your fingers, because you just feel so bad for the poor characters.

On the other hand, this book was published in 1965, and it shows. I don't think the racist, sexist, antisemitic, pro-colonization attitudes expressed by the various characters are Wouk's - he's Jewish, for one thing, and he's mostly making a point about these characters, and these attitudes. The homophobia, I'm not sure. But the book's steeped in -ism and -phobia, and I cringed a lot.

I enjoyed this book (for some value of "enjoy") right up until near the end, where a sudden shift in tone ruined everything.
Don't Stop the SpoilersTwo characters die unexpectedly; a minor character, and then a more major character, and everything goes from zany slapstick disasters ameliorated at the last minute to a somber reckoning in the ashes of last night's party. In this light, the ending feels jarring: the resort's problems are solved, the future looks rosy, and Norman realizes he is not cut out for life in Paradise and, selling the resort to another sucker, returns to the icy New York winter.

Reflecting on it, I think this ending is a better ending than the glib alternative of the resort's problems are solved, the future looks rosy, and Norman raises a glass and looks forward to dealing with whatever Paradise throws at him in the future. But because everything has gone somber, it feels not like he's learned a lesson and acknowledged reality, but that he's had his face rubbed in horror and decided he can't cope. If he'd celebrated his success and then ruefully stepped away, it would be an act of strength, but he runs back home, defeated, and all his experience along the way seems pointless.

Generation Loss by Elizabeth Hand - I got this book in a fantasy book Humble Bundle, so I was expecting fantasy, which this is very much not. It's a psychological thriller, following the first-person narrator Cass Neary, a fucked-up, drugged-out, briefly brilliant photographer who has been sent by an old acquaintance to interview a reclusive photographer - one of Cass's heroes - on a Maine island.

I kept reading because the narrative voice is fabulous and incredibly seductive, even though the character is a terrible person who does terrible things in between slugs of Jack Daniels and gulps of stolen uppers. It feels very immersive, both in the sense of being immersed in the world of the novel's events and in the sense of being immersed in the perspective of a messed-up photographer. But overall it's not really the sort of book I typically read, and it's not something I'd recommend unless you're into this type of book.

Mysteries of the Universe, I guess?

Also mildly convinced there's something going on/I'm supposed to have done by tomorrow but also nothing comes to mind. I have a busy week next week, but this week is pretty open. But it's also Fat Tuesday and the Lunar New Year so perhaps my brain is trying to juggle those in.

Other than that, work last night wasn't ridiculous but I hadn't slept well, so I pretty much deflated early but slept decent. I did get runners checked for both Star Abyss kits so I'm just going to count the entire day as a win anyway, lol. I'll keep working on the Destiny Astray when I have the brain power, and I grabbed a battered KO GM to poke at otherwise.

The world is complicated and there are a lot of things to have feelings about, obviously on a macro level, but for me on a more micro level as well.

But.

I spent the day with various groups of friends, and doing a bunch of knitting work and making things with my hands. And it feels very very good.

I'm happy for that. I hope you can also find things that make you happy.

In today's dubious triumph over aphasia, I told my client I'd emptied out her utility kit.

Her toolbag. I couldn't remember toolbag and tried to use the next best thing to describe the object in question.

It was a fairly remarkable moment on a number of levels, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be shaking my head over it for quite some time.
