I remember seeing the ads for SPN before it debuted, and getting super-excited with my sister. We sat down on the floor of my new place in front of the TV while I was still moving in, because there was nowhere better to sit, and watched it together, and were OVERJOYED because it was so...so. You know.
There always was that tension in it, of being for people like us but also not quite for people like US. And the showrunners never quite got it. Whatever, I guess. That's how it goes. As someone else noted in another post, Supernatural is over and now it passes forever from the hands of the creators into the hands of the fans. The fans know what to do with it.
