Those were pretty much my thoughts exactly, although I ended up watching the other way around - checking out the 2012 stream and then immediately feeling the need to go back to the movie. I thought they could have gone some compelling places with Minchin's casting given his association with atheism in the audience's mind, but the show lost me pretty quickly in two scenes: opting for almost achingly boring motivations in "Everything's All Right" (the fact that in the 1973 movie, Mary sings the second verse to Judas lets her be so much more interesting than in the 2012 show) and the absolute yikes of how they decided to stage the temple scene. Very weird costuming choices too.
