The husbeast's company has laid a bunch of people off. They company is expecting to have to weather basically a year with no revenue, and this was their plan to manage that workable - dramatically reduce the number of people they have to pay. Make 40 odd people unemployed. My dear husbeast is fine- they'll keep him on with a reduced salary that is annoying but still workable for our expenses, but it's a blow that came much earlier than he expected.
The business works with online retailers in one of those fields where people usually cut back fairly immediately if they are feeling a pinch, and since they work directly with the bigger companies, they are basically have to allow this bigger companies to just... not pay them on contracts for months until the companies feel like they can spare the money.
It's shit, particularly because this team and this company have been largely devoid of jerks and doing work that is relatively interesting and low stress AND well paid, so all the people getting laid off are nice people.

I really dislike having to be grateful that worse things have not happened yet.
