Date: 2010-01-10 04:55 pm (UTC)Did you know that MULHOLLAND DR was meant to be a pilot for an ongoing show? When the show never got picked up, Lynch got the cast back together to shoot new scenes and completely change the direction of the story. I'm guessing right around the lesbian sex.
I think this is the first Lynch film I've seen, but it might well not be. I only recently (read: last five years or so) started paying much attention to the names of directors.
That was about where I'd put the seam, too, but DAMN, they were slashy in the lead-up. I was getting all ready in the theater to be offended at the lack of lesbian sex, and then they gave me what I was waiting for.
What's funny is that the DVD comes with "ten clues to understanding what the hell the film's about." Like, "Pay close attention to the phone by the lamp," stuff like that. The gag is that some if not most of the clues are total BS.
As my viewing buddy mentioned at the time- "I've watched mindfuck anime that made more sense than this." In Japanese, without subtitles, I would presume.
Thing is, I'm not sure if I'm intrigued enough to watch it again and try and figure it out better, or if I'm bewildered enough to just say, "Fuck it." and go about my merry way.
But, I have been meaning to check out TWIN PEAKS for a while now (Henry Jenkins made me do it), so I I think that I'll give that a try in my copious free time (ha. ha. ha.) and see what I can make of it.
