And I don't know about 11th century pirates, but 17th century pirates were historically queer as hell, so it's an even weirder hill to die on in this case.
Yeah, it's almost like people making a living with a small group of like-minded people might have self selected for that kind of community for... a reason. Just maybe.
Also, and I didn't want to dig too far into this b/c it's tangential and not my historical field and this was a book review. BUT. When it's specifically a story set in the Muslim world and you're dealing with a US audience... Claims of homophobia have been leveled against Muslim people as part of the big US propaganda push to legitimize wars in Muslim countries. It's a thing! It was really everywhere for years after 2001, and I don't think the US has really dealt with that. I don't truly feel like I have a good handle on the subject, but I'm just... tentative when that kind of claim comes up from nowhere.
