Whenever I hear complaints about lack of homophobia in historical fiction, it just makes me think about how historical fiction almost always glosses over a lot of unpleasant historical realities because they are not enjoyable for modern people to read about, and yet somehow the homophobia thing is the hill they choose to die on.
And I don't know about 11th century pirates, but 17th century pirates were historically queer as hell, so it's an even weirder hill to die on in this case.
