People are weird. I am still vaguely insulted, though further investigation has led to the belief that the age limit for the beverage I was purchasing was probably 18 (one can buy beer 5% and under at 16, and then things more potent are reserved for those over 18. Still you can get pretty damned drunk on beer.)
