Water Update

The results of yesterdays work on the water line were, um, disappointing.  By this morning the tanks were just over 1/8th full and the water was just trickling in.  So this afternoon, after mowing the parking and camping areas, and working on the bridge, it was time to look at the water system again.
The first project was to shorten pipe that brings water into the tank. Read more... )

Dept. of Theological Meanderings

Architecture and Monotheism

It's just something I thought while Bob and I were talking in bed last night. Talk turned to religion as more than occasionally happens. He may be atheist and I may be an intermittent agnostic that believes in something on alternate Thursdays, but we have always liked playing with the ideas and philosophies connected to religion in general.

And something that had been simmering in my head over the last while - months, possibly a couple of years - finally bubbled up in words.

OK - here's where folks of faith can feel free to stop reading, or to roll their eyes at me, or be offended. This is what I believe and I expect no one else to agree with me.

Seriously. Believers might want to avoid )

Tick, tick, ticking away

Anella, spring 2026Spring flowers continue in Queens, so I've been doing a spring tromp through my area's cemeteries and started putting some photos up. My knees have been bothering me a bit while picking my way along All Faiths Cemetery's uneven ground, but my podiatrist-mandated sneakers have mostly kept me from turning any ankles.

You can see my photos at my Flickr.

I enjoyed the Nine Inch Nails & Boys Noize set at Coachella, so I bought the album attached to their tour. Then listened to it tonight while driving down the highway in my car, truly the best way. It was sometimes difficult to stay within the speed limit doing it but y'know. Ten out of ten, would bob my head and drive too fast to this a hundred times.

I do wonder if the inclusion of "Heresy" and "The Warning" in this set is a pointed reference to current events. (Hey, proportionally, there are a lot of Year Zero songs reworked in this set, and Year Zero's whole thing was the apocalypse, militarism, weaponized religion, and environmental devastation. Just saying.)

This album brought back to me how much my neck is involved in enjoying and experiencing some music. I don't, can't, headbang, but I do bob and throw my head back a bit sometimes as I'm really feeling it. Makes me glad the doctors didn't fuse my neck as they thought they should maybe do to decrease my pain 20 years ago. But the traction they thought would make me feel wonderful actually greatly increased my pain and dizziness, made me panic and feel like I was dying. Thanks to that, I now understand animals that gnaw their own feet off to get out of a trap because the getitoffgetitoffgetitoffgetitoffGETITOFF I felt....

For some reason, Sting's music recently came to mind, starting with The Dream of the Blue Turtles, so I've been borrowing his albums from the Queens Library system. For whatever reason, Ten Summoner's Tales has been listed as "In Transit" for over a month, so I got clever and put in an order for another copy of the album a few days ago. And picked it up today. If the other copy ever shows up for pick-up, I'll take care of it. Otherwise, the request will time out in July.

My new iPhone is still screwing up the album cover images on my music, so Ten Summoner's Tales has the cover of Weird Al Yankovic's Mandatory Fun when loaded onto my phone.

Rainbow (Amnesty): Kirby (series): fanart: colorful flight

Title: colorful flight
Theme: Rainbow (for the current Amnesty)
Fandom: Kirby (video game series) - particularly Kirby's Dream Land 2. (Mods please tag as Kirby.)
Rating: PG
Content notes: It might be a tiny bit bright to look at due to the special effects.. Uhhh, eyestrain warning.
Artist notes: This.. prolly won't be the only Kirby artwork I do for the current Amnesty. It's my Kirby Era right now and I tend to draw more than write when it comes to this fandom, haha.. Dream Land 2 was not my personal first Kirby game, but it does contain great chiptunes and some of my favorite NPCs! :D
Summary: Within a more modern, colorful means, Kirby restores the magical bridges between the Rainbow Islands with the aid of the Rainbow Sword, cheerful to restore the lost colors.

Spring Sprung and Recs Recced

After a light dusting of snow on the 19th spring has finally sprung and sprung with a vengeance here (to be fair it was unseasonably hot before that snow and now again after, 20+ degrees (f) warmer than usual which is making my least favorite time of year even worse due to a combo of Blargh-Pollen-Everywhere allergies and encroaching ants (dudes, the outside is where you should be! You do not pay rent, do not be in my house). Sigh. Usual tactics to get them gone aren't working either, it might be exterminator time which I hate to do, but oh well.

This is neat: NASA's Your Name in Landsat (see your name spelled out in landsat imagery of the Earth)

Nothing much else interesting is happening in my neck of the woods, I've been doing a lot of cleaning and organizing (a cute self-care/tracking app I use, Finch, had a challenge last month where it suggested little tasks to do each day/every few days and I found it a great way to do things without being overwhelmed - like dust a shelf, go through one drawer, etc - so I've been trying to keep it up and do something most days.) And craftwise, I'm nearly finished with a blanket. Not sure what project I'll do next, something will come to me, though I'm sure.

And for the main reason for this post... here, have three weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (lots of tumblr art and one MDZS/Untamed fic):

Doctor Who (Classic)
- More Four Stuff (A whole bunch of adorable Four doodles)

Discworld
- its a heavy burden, having a heart as big as a city. and heavier still when it loves you back (love the way the Ankh Morpork is silhouetted in the background with Vetinari and Sybil looking down at Vimes)

MDZS/The Untamed
- my baby my baby (gorgeous LWJ holding a bunny sketch)

Merlin
- The Favour (love the dreaminess of this)

Nirvana in Fire
- Consort Jing (gorgeous)

Sherlock Holmes
- "Labours of Love" English paper piecing: Doodles and Research (fascinating read and wonderful art)

Supernatural
- Happy Easter!! ✨🐝 "Thought the boys deserved at least one nice, happy Easter egg hunt and in my mind Bobby did so too :)" (adorable comic)

X-Files
- awoo (hilarious Mulder and Scully comic)

MDZS/Untamed fic:
A Fork in the Road by Bodldops (142k)
Summary: With a small change, Wei Wuxian has a chance to reconsider his stance. That change leads to others. The most important words you can say, after all, are thank you, and I am sorry. It is better to say them earlier, than later through tears. ( an interesting turn-left AU where canon events shift post WWX punching JZN in Cloud Recessess. FYI contains some Jiang, especially Madam Yu, bashing)

My cup's already overfilled.

Earlier today, I overheard someone saying that she ate "like a pig" last night, largely for her having eaten ice cream. I wanted to make a joke about acorns or truffles, but decided against it on the grounds that I knew she wouldn't know what I was talking about.

It did get me thinking, though, and it had me fairly pleased to find out that acorn ice cream is a thing people do - not on any commercial scale, but individual restaurants and kitchens. I'd thought it might taste malty, and all the descriptions provided agree with that.

I highly doubt I'll get a chance to try it anytime soon, but knowing it already exists is good enough for tonight.

I had an appointment with my neurologist this afternoon. The weather was nice enough that I got onion soup at the Panera in the clinic lobby and ate it outdoors before seeing Dr. Sloane.

The doctor did some low-tech neurology, including watching me walk quickly down the hall, having me walk tightrope-style to check my balance, and testing my grip strength by having me squeeze his fingers. The doctor said there was no change in those, but I think my balance was better today than at the last visit. He then sent me downstairs for blood tests: my vitamin D is where we want it (at the top of the "normal" range), and the abnormally low antibody count is what we expect from the Kesimpta.

I asked about reducing the gabapentin dose to 900 mg, since when I went from 1500 mg to 1200 the medication continued to be effective at stopping my legs from twitching at night. (For a while, it was 1500 mg, with the option of taking another 300 mg capsule if necessary. I went to 1200 after a few months of never needing the extra capsule.) The doctor said I could try it, but he would prescribe 1200 mg/day (I think the last refill was for 1500 mg/day.)

I then walked up the hill to Brigham and Women's Hospital to keep [personal profile] adrian_turtle company in the epilepsy monitoring unit. We talked some, I made some phone calls on her behalf, and I sat quietly reading next to her bed for a bit.

All in all, I did a lot of walking today, despite taking a Lyft to the neurologist; some of that was because I got turned around a couple of times, including inside the hospital. (I stayed home yesterday because my knee was bothering me, and wasn't sure how much walking I had in me today.)

I spent large chunks of today cutting down garbage trees both front and back. I don't know what they are but I want them gone. The gardener was supposed to have removed them three years ago, but garbage trees are like cockroaches. One is never rid of them. A machete would have come in handy but the nameless tool with a serrated blade did well enough. I've cut the garage ones back to the root knot but have neither the strength nor the inclination to dig those out. I will try the effect of bleach instead. After which I was hacking away at the overgrown vines on the fence by the garage when SND's fiancé stopped me. He says there are birds nesting in the thicket, so I had to stop. Apparently by the end of May they'll have hatched and then he says he'll cut back the branches for me. He was out with my tree branch lopper, which he managed to assemble for me, cutting the cherry branches on the other side of his yard, the one belonging to Good Neighbour Chris.

I did manage to cut some of the dead and dried vines off the fence closer to the house, but my back was in conniptions by that point. Came inside and stretched, and shortly thereafter tackled the things growing in the front yard. This was much antsier because the footing in front is so uneven, what with the invasive species Eglish ivy. I begin to think boat shoes ie my New Balances, are maybe not the best footware for this, though I can't think what is. Something lighter and flatter that registers the ground underfoot better. But again, sawed down some quite thick stems leaving only the root knots, handy for tripping over should you be wading about my front lawn. Then took out some of the dead wood from the hedge, and finally sawed through the branches of the very dead pine in the corner of the planter. Sawing all this wood to an acceptable length for the garbage guys and tying it up as you're supposed to will be a pain, but sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

I expect to be crippled tomorrow and might try for a massage. Can only hope this counts as exercise and calorie burning.
