Various updates

I was feeling pretty optimistic about the sort-of-blank-verse poem I wrote a couple months ago, both in terms of how I felt about it personally and "no news is good news" when other people are getting rejections via Submission Grinder ;) but that didn't pan out. So now I get to try sending it (and some older stuff) to a new journal. (This is a spinoff of another magazine that I generally like and support but have been burned by in that they never responded, not even to the "hey did you get this," the first time I submitted to them. To their credit, the new mag has a policy of "if you don't hear anything after four weeks, assume rejection.")

Fun fact: in undergrad I semi-often wound up writing blank-verse-ish stuff as the result of a tug of war between my professors, who liked pretentious completely free verse, and me, who preferred more formal constraints like sonnets and stuff. ;) This time at least it's more deliberate.

I am out of the country seeing the world for the next few weeks! Not sure what my computer access will look like, I may have some downtime, but no promises--comments on exchange fic, etc. may be delayed. I have stocked up on plenty of reading material so hopefully there will be a couple bingo reviews coming later or sooner.

In the process of stocking up, there was a free giveaway of hardcopy books on a library shelf, and the original "Mistborn" was up for grabs, score! I don't think I need it on the plane, but good for canon review, or to give to someone else to get them into Sanderson :P

Darksight Dare uploaded today!

The new Penric & Desdemona novella has just been uploaded on our five vendor platforms. It will take up to three days for some to show up on their vendor pages; I'll provide links as they emerge. This round, Kindle is first out of the gate:

To recap the description,

"Penric takes a chance…

Two intractable problems are brought to the door of sorcerer Learned Penric of Vilnoc and his Temple demon Desdemona. Cinar Camurat, a mutilated Cedonian cavalry captain, has traveled two thousand sea miles to Penric for aid. Iva of Bita, a secret hedge sorceress, lies dying in her Orban hill village, and wants no aid at all.

Penric and Desdemona know well the hazards of medicine and magic, but their greatest puzzle may lodge in the tangle of hopes and fears in human and demonic hearts."

As always, about the only push these indie e-novellas get from me are these blog posts, so any mention or reviews of my stories out and about on the Net and elsewhere by readers are much appreciated.

I just recently reposted the updated Bujold reading-order guide, to help out those welcome new readers daunted by the wall o' books: https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog... Do please pass the link along.

Onwards, L.

intro

I'm new to DW and this community and wanted to say HI :)

I'm a person who loves to read but doesn't do it as much as they'd like. But I'm trying to read 12 books this year, let's see how it goes! I just finished the first volume of the Book of Dust trilogy by Philip Pullman and and am now reading the third Emily Wilde book, Compendium of Lost Tales. I've been very much into fantasy and (queer) dark academia lately.

Some of my favourite books are His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix and The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland. I really wish Douglas Coupland hadn't posted this dumb-as-fuck fanboy article about Melon Husk a few years ago, he used to be one of my favourite authors. But I still love The Gum Thief with all my heart and re-read it every other year or so.

Happy to be here and yap about books :)

PS: Is it even OK to post intros? If not please let me know.

Check-In Post - April 23rd 2026

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Does your crafting change with the seasons, certain crafts at certain times of the year?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Friday Storytime- Downton Abbey/Maurice crossover

A Different Path

Chapter 3: In a Bit of a Spot

Clive requests Thomas's help with his studies, before he goes on holiday alone, leaving Thomas and Alec confused about what is going on between Clive and Maurice.

~~~~
Over the next few weeks, months and heading for a year, Mr Hall visited Pendersleigh on a regular basis, not realising that he was being studied from afar by his admirers. Well, Alec, anyway, was gazing hopefully at him at any opportunity.
Thomas was more neutral about Mr Hall. He was intent on making himself indispensable to the Durham family because he did NOT want to be sent back to Downton Abbey, or lose his job. He concentrated on not being devious, not plotting against anyone else, and this was made a lot easier because Miss O’Brien, his co-conspirator, was obviously not there to scheme with and manipulate him. Alec was a lot more straightforward and a lot more fun than she was. He was more interested in getting on with people and proving he was not meant to be in service, which Thomas could completely understand. Servitude did not suit either of them, and they dreamed of escaping and being independent men, somehow.
One day, Durham rang for tea, and Thomas took it to his study. He was about to leave when Durham said, “I say, Barrow, my good man. I find myself in a bit of a spot.”
“Can I help, sir?”
“I must post my essay to my tutor as soon as possible, but I need someone to listen to it one more time and see if it makes sense, if the grammar etcetera is correct. Would you be so kind as to help me? There’s no one else here I could ask. It’s not a suitable topic for my mama or sister, and Simcox would have apoplexy if I asked him. He doesn’t approve of such subjects.”
Thomas was intrigued. “Of course, sir. I am all ears.”
Durham began to read, the subject seemed to be the ancient Greeks and continued onto the subject of platonic love. Thomas didn’t really know what he was talking about but the structure of the essay and flow of ideas seemed to make sense.
But just as it was getting interesting with the god Zeus admiring a human man, Durham said, “I'll omit the references to the unspeakable vice of the Greeks,” and hummed to himself as he scanned the pages, “er—blah blah blah, dah dee dah.”
Three Pieces Of Meta M Found Recently That They Like
An Entirely Too Serious and Detailed Omegaverse Primer, which is essentially the author's personal worldbuilding headcanons for their version of the Omegaverse, but with an eye turned towards medical realism, given that they're writing for The Pitt. I <3 worldbuilding primers almost as much as I <3 Omegaverse.
Purist-Anarchist Ship Discourse Alignments, which made me laugh so hard. Gave me a flashback to arguing about Voltron ships on Tumblr, which I never actually thought I'd be nostalgic for.
And finally, Haruka Isn't Autistic-Coded – He Has an Intellectual Disability (And Why That Matters), a Milgram meta that I wish I could force everyone in the fandom to read. This came out before Trial 3, but it has overall aged wonderfully in spite of that.
Expense of spirit
Involved in proving, for certain life admin purposes, that partner and I are real people who are who we say we are, involving downloading an app, which one then has to validate by entering one's ID and they will send a code by text 'may take a few minutes', they have a very capacious definition of 'few minutes', ahem. Then entering various details, scanning various documents to a satisfactory quality (don't ask, just don't ask, I have done screaming now, thanks), and taking a selfie.
Do we even wish to detain ourselves over Michael Billington's ranking of the works of the Bard? I pretty much Dorothy Parkered, as much as one can with a newspaper, when I saw he had not only put Much Ado 20th out of 35, but considers B&B the subplot.
Light the barbecue in the marketplace, I have a heart to eat there!
Though it is hardly anywhere near the same class for utter crassness of this - honestly, why are these people? A tourist has been charged after allegedly climbing a colossal marble statue in Florence to touch its genitals for a pre-wedding prank.
There's always something with Aria! She's had a loose upper front tooth for quite a while; the tooth has just been hanging by a thread but stubbornly refusing to completely disengage. Yesterday she was at a friend's place (with her mother and Eden) and when they came home she came rushing down to show Violet, who was with me in the basement, that her tooth was out. And the way it came out was surprising: somebody, probably my daughter, tied a thread around the tooth and tied the other end of the thread to a remote control car. Then the car was set in motion and boom, the tooth was out. I wish I'd been there to see it.
Aria is very excited about me going to her school performance tomorrow. She keeps reminding me, in case I forget.
I was thinking of going for a run before breakfast this morning but when it came to the time I just didn't feel like it, so I decided to go after breakfast instead, when it would be a bit warmer. It was above freezing early in the morning but the temperature rose slightly more later in the morning. By the time "after breakfast" rolled around I didn't feel very motivated but I made myself go out and did enjoy being out in the sun, but the humidity this week is higher than last week so it wasn't quite as enjoyable being out as it has been. Unfortunately I know it's usually very humid here all summer so I'm resigned to sweaty runs and walks.
So mostly these days I am obsessed with The Pitt! I love the show so much, for itself, and because it's such a natural successor to MASH and other shows I have loved. I've said on Bluesky that it's the only show I've ever come across that really understands how teaching and growth and mentoring happen in a professional environment - fandom is full of academia stories, and indeed academics, and school and high school stories, but not so much the grown-up, affirming, important work of teaching someone to do your job because you, they and the job all matter. (What do I teach people to do! Not save lives. But it matters. I had a lovely, lovely email from one of my team before she went off on maternity leave that said wonderful things about my teaching, about what she'd learned from me, how her practice had changed as a result of me, at which point I had to go and lie down and cry for a while. When Robby says with emphasis, "This is a teaching hospital", it makes me think of it.
(Brief outline: Robby, otherwise Dr Michael Robinavitch, is a warm, scathing, compassionate soul who runs an emergency department in Pittsburgh, it's an ensemble cast of interns, resident doctors, patients, nurses and others and Robby is the keystone of it all in a tired, mentally ill kind of a way. Each episode of the show covers an hour, so the entire season covers a single shift. It's very good. Also Robby is played by Noah Wyle - and, as the show's executive producers lost a litigation against the IP-holders for ER, he is emphatically not John Carter. I love this. Robby feels, and is, beautifully imagined: a working-class Jewish man, who wears a magen David necklace, all because Carter was a WASP with a trust fund.)
I also love Trinity Santos, a brilliant lovely Filipina asshole of a lesbian, and Jack Abbot, who is Robby's friend and also mirror image - being to the night shift what Robby is the day - and also fascinating for himself. He's a former MASH combat medic which is what decided me for sure that the show deliberately draws on its predecessor. The Pitt isn't a sitcom, but it has the warmth MASH had; and Abbot, who is a lower-leg amputee, embodies some of its ambivalence. (And! In s2 they have someone deliver Henry Blake's "young men die" speech, with the same blocking as the original. I love it.)
Anyway I love this show. It is so rich and funny and so fucking human, all the damn time. Robby's PTSD is from covid, and his nightmares are of full PPE - and I was like, okay, do I want to watch this. Robby has PTSD from treating covid patients but my dad died from treating covid patients. But I did want to watch it, because it takes what it does seriously. I want to write a fic, about Robby and s2 spoiler ), and I also want it to be a daemon AU, because I am insane. I haven't written anything good in a year and like I said I am insane. Maybe I should just ask people to give me fic prompts.
