FANVIDS DAY
I've loved many fanvids, and unfortunately saved very few of them :/. But I encountered a few when I was going through my Black Sails tag to hunt for recommendations, and I decided to share those, and a few others, to close rec-cember.
Black Sails
- Charles Vane + "Bella Ciao" (Chumbawamba's version) by @somfte.
- John Silver + "Money Money Money" (Mama Mia!'s version) by @findsilver.
- Max & John Silver + "Nobody" (Mitski) by @whereyoudontseeme.
- Mr. Scott, Eleanor, and Madi + Spiegel im Spiegel (Arvo Pärt) by @somfte.
Others
- Buffy/Faith + "Feelin' Kinda Naughty" (the "I want to wear your skin" song in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) by @amelia.
- Phoebe Halliwell & Sam Winchester + "What's New" (Megan Thee Stallion) by @claudiabian.
- Polyphemus (the Odyssey) + "Nobody" (Mitski, again) by @barrbodiedberry
- Spacekru (The 100) + "Home II" (Dotan) by @bombshellsandbluebells
ALSO I discovered this too late to recommend it in the Murderbot Diaries's post, but: here's some (way too sexy) Murderbot art 😔
And at last, a couple of Yuletide recommendations!
- Knife, a Rope (1948) fic. 4.9k, M. It shows a bit of how Brandon and Phillip came to be... whatever they are in the film, to each other. Superb characterisation.
- night-trap, a Carmilla (novella) fic. 7.6k, M. Years after the novella, the two women meet again. GREAT "becoming the monster" take, with very vivid prose.
Me-and-media update (Happy New Year!)
In the dance dance revolution poll, 5.8% of respondents had danced with other people that week, 1.9% with a pet or other animal, and 28.8% had danced on their own, while 46.2% said no or not yet. Making the poll prompted me to dance with my sister in the kitchen for half a Spin Doctors song, but I didn't change my vote on that basis.
In ticky-boxes, "enthusiastically and fervently loving what you love" came second to hugs, 63.5% to 76.9%. Thank you for your votes! <3

Other TV
We finished Pluribus, which was super interesting in terms of a) moral quandaries, and b) difficult personalities crashing into each other. Finished the available episodes of Stranger Things and season 3 of Dark Winds, both of which were a bit dark, hence the doodling.
I've just signed up for Neon (NZ HBO), so this morning I did my stretches while John Oliver slagged off the British monarchy. I'm planning to try the new hockey sensation, but I'm saving it for while Andrew is in hospital, and we don't yet know when that will be. (In the meantime, no spoilers, please!)
Audio entertainment
The usual: Writing Excuses, Cross Party Lines, Letters from an American. Plus the AI episode of Our Opinions Are Correct.

Looking back on writing this year, as the year comes to an end
With the end of the year in sight, I've been thinking about how writing went this year. I am, of course, not meeting my

Also, something interesting is going to happen in 2026! Adding all my word counts from 2020 until today, the total comes to 975K. Obviously, everything could go spectacularly to shit, but based on the past few years, there's a very good chance I'm going to reach that 1 million words milestone next year. I'm a bit nervous because I started writing again in 2020 firmly with a quote in mind, something I'd heard around the lines of "everybody has 1 million bad words in them before they can get to the good ones; unfortunately the only way to get rid of them is to write them out" and that's been a source of comfort when my writing doesn't always meet the standard I hope for. What will I do if word #1,000,001 is actually pretty crap anyway, though?? Haha. My mind is already preparing "well it wasn't 1M words of novel-sized projects, so you have to keep at it anyway" etc etc, so I will probably be okay either way ;)
But still. Something to look forward to :)

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries: 31 December 2025 (Advent Devotional)
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:1-2)
I feel sorry for the wise men. They came from the east in all innocence, expecting to visit a newborn king. And so naturally they looked for Him first in the palace of the king of Judea—I mean, where else would you find the heir to the throne?
They didn’t know the baby wasn’t from Herod’s family. They didn’t know that Herod was a monster who would kill tiny children to protect his throne. And so, with the best of intentions, they were caught up in a horrible story. I hope they never learned what happened.
But this can happen to us, too. In complete innocence, we can say something or do something that turns into tragedy—and we never intended it. We would give our lives to undo it, but we can’t. And it breaks our hearts.
If you are in this situation, God understands and grieves for you. Jesus Himself must have known that His birth led to the death of other children. Let Him comfort you.
And if you ever fear that you do in fact bear some real guilt for what happened—let Jesus deal with that, too. Because that is the reason He came to earth, to take away all sin and guilt and to heal the damage they do to us. He wants to see you healed and blessed—He died and rose again to make it so. And He calls you to Himself in love.
WE PRAY: Dear Jesus, You know everything. Please help. Amen.
Reflection Questions:
- Do you carry regrets?
- How can you carry that grief to Jesus?
- Is there someone who could use your prayers for an unhealed grief?

Danceman December Dance Party #20: Kawashima Mifu
Omifu debuted with Juice=Juice in February with the release of the double A side, Hatsukoi no Bourei/Kon'ya wa Hearty Party, a single which mostly passed me by due to my extreme association of Juice=Juice with Karin, and only Karin. Despite this, I was aware of Omifu, not by name, but by sight, as I vaguely remembered the promotional material following the auditions which saw her win a place with the kenshuusei after having failed three separate prior auditions for a place with Morning Musume and ANGERME, as well as the joint Tsubaki Factory and Juice=Juice auditions. A year later finding her feet, however, she was awarded with a judge's prize during the research students' concert, and a year after that, with another award under her belt, it was announced she was joining Juice=Juice. But wait, you might proclaim, looking at this timeline, if she joined the group in 2023, why was her debut single in 2025? Ah! Alas! From the October following the announcement throughout most of 2024, Omifu was unable to perform due to a sudden loss of hearing that required both surgical intervention and a long, long period of recovery. I cannot begin to imagine how terrifying it must have been to have gone through that, to finally make it to where the start of where you want to be only to have something out of your control happen like that. I was completely unaware of all that Omifu was going through during this point, I wasn't even aware of her having joined Juice=Juice, but I am relieved to report that in April 2024, Omifu began to resume activities, leading us to where we are now, the release of More! Mi Amore sending her popularity skyrocketing.
In the Hello! Project Official Shop in late autumn, it came as no surprise to me that Omifu's photo that month had sold out. I first became aware of her around 2022-ish when she appeared in a video alongside Tanaka Reina, and I was struck by how emotional she was during the performance, mouthing her words as she danced before eventually burst into tears following the performance, but because I am an idiot, I didn't follow her career; in October, I felt more like an idiot for not having followed her as everything about her presence in More! Mi Amore stands out so vividly, from the skill of her dancing, to the delivery of her lines, to her presence amongst her peers. If I had been smarter in 2022, I would have made it my resolution to follow her, rather than arriving late to the party with everyone else. What is important is that I am here now though, just in time for the New Year! My resolution for 2026 will be to support Omifu more!

Currently reading "Hospicing Modernity" by Vanessa Machado de Oliveira Andreotti, which is a down-to-earth, practical manual on how to expand past the limitations that modernity puts on our thoughts, imagination, and experiences. The author talks directly about how difficult it is to address people's frozen assumptions without triggering defensiveness, while encouraging the reader to open up, side-step defensiveness, and explore wider possibilities.
I just got past the introductory exercises, which feel similar to the trauma-healing work I've been doing all this time. I always feel like I'm behind, trying to catch up to people who had more ordinary and loving childhoods but maybe those aren't so ordinary, and maybe all that work leaves me in a more flexible place.
Highly recommended! You can read a couple of sample chapters at decolonialfutures.net/hospicingmodernity
