5. I'm not going to lie, I still think PC/laptops are the best thing I own and I would not part with them for any tablet or phone or other thing.


4. Black Diamond Headlamp - it's tiny for a headlamp and great for reading in the dark or meandering thru a dark space with your hands free.

3. Stand mixer - honestly, really a nice thing to have when we were making a metric buttload of cookies recently.


2. Aftershokz Headphones - Bone induction wireless headphones. Amazing. I can listen to music while also being out and about and aware of my surroundings, I stopped having heart attacks when people snuck up on me while listening to music, and I honestly feel like my ears are happier.

1. Let's be real, I am a Kindle fanatic. The combination of being able to download fic as .epub files off AO3 and send them to Kindle over wifi and emailed from my cellphone has functionally make my Kindle Paperwhite into an incredibly useful extension of my fanfic reading. I set up a separate gmail account to send .epubs to my Kindle, so it also functions as a backup file system for my past reading, even if Kindle's overlords decide to bail on supporting outside files. It's honestly lifechanging in terms of eye strain. But it all needs to be in place or the utility of any one part of it just becomes a toy again.

(Obligatory: Amazon as a company is in wild need of regulation and privacy restrictions, so if you're in the US, honestly consider writing your senator about their labor practices.)



*Yeah, the Daily part of December Daily is not accurate but since the goal of this was "post more than the Wednesday reading meme" and it's a Monday, I'm calling it a win!

I'm always interested to find out how others access fanworks.

Totally agree about the PC thing. I download stuff to my computer and then sideload it onto my eReader when I'm down to about 10 works on it. (I don't save, I just delete once I've finished).

Over the years I have become a bit skittish about deleting things - every so often a fic I adore will end up deleted by the author and there are a few I have never been able to find or re-read because of that. And I love to re-read - one things a bad memory is great for is to experience a work fresh all over again.

I completely stand by anyone's right to bow out of fandom for whatever reason, and to take their works offline if they want to! But I do appreciate having backups for my own personal enjoyment, so I'm building some redundancy into my system. :)

Oh yes, it's a good idea for preservation purposes! Lots of fandom classics have vanished for one reason or another. And a lot of people are re-readers with favorites they go to, so I know many people have set up procedures for saving and retrieval.

I technically do have some works saved but it's maybe 30-40 after 20 years. And I have never re-read any of them, I just thought I might want to. There's always such a long queue of new stuff that I know I'm very unlikely to go back to anything.

Same, honestly, there is a lot of churn in fandom. But there's something about 'the one that got away' that makes me a little wistful...

Same. Tablets and phones are fine for when you're on the go, but writing things (fic, emails, papers, etc.) is so much easier for me on a computer.

Honestly, yes. Tablets are great for access, I need some actual buttons for real input.
