Leave a Kudos!

Since DW doesn't have the option to just like a post or leave a kudos, please feel totally free to take this tiny poll and leave kudos if you don't feel like commenting on any particular post.

Hey, this seems like a good way to implement a Likes/Kudos option! I wonder if there is some way to strip the code down to something simpler... I'm gonna mess around with this feature a little bit. Thanks for posting this!

To be honest, I actually like that there isn't a like or kudos option for posts since it forces someone to write a response. Of course, there are times when you want to acknowledge something but either feel you don't have to words to respond, or there really isn't a need to respond, and in those cases, it would be nice to have the option to like something. At the same time, I think that the option to like something simultaneously increases the distance between users, because it gives a way out of what could be a potential conversation between people (I'm thinking of kudos/likes to comments ratios on both AO3 and Tumblr, and how fics/posts will have several kudos/likes before a single person actually says something). So, I can see how people would want it, but I feel like it would be nice to experience a website without this option for once.

i agree with this--liking is a feedback shorthand that all too often devolves into the only feedback.

that said, instead of wiring up new code, if we really wanted to establish likes on dw perhaps we could turn commenting with "<3" into a place-holder?

I think that's a good idea. I've had the same thought as draconic_flare -- that "liking" becomes an easy and often meaningless gesture very quickly on social media sites, and as someone who's never received a comment on a fic, I absolutely agree with their take on kudoes on Ao3. At the same time, though, as someone who also frequently posts personal blog updates that don't lend themselves to commenting, it'd be nice to have a way to know someone is reading. And, <3 is a good alternative to a rather awkward kudo or like on a post about one's ongoing health problem or the death of a relative.

Since this poll is is on top of your whole journal, I guess I just kudosed the concept of you? Good.
