Temples, Tombs & Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt

Temples, Tombs & Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt by Barbara Mertz

A light discussion of Egypt. Admittedly covering a long period of history and so necessarily cursory in place. Discusses what records we have and what archeological evidence we have found, and various Pharaohs and changes.

FFA DW Post #2447 You wouldn't download a colon: The darkest recesses of true inflatable colon crime

I feel like every email would be improved by signing off with "enjoy the large inflatable colon" tbh.

I picture some doctor trying to hang up the handmade banner reading WELCOME HOME COLON ... and the frustration after it came back from the printer's as "WELCOME HOME :" for the third time.

Next attempt = WELCOME BACK : THE WORD NOT THE SYMBOL

*looks at pic*
That's not a colon; that's a semi-colon!

Follow Friday 3-13-26

Got any Follow Friday-related posts to share this week? Comment here with the link(s).

Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die".

soc_puppet: Dreamsheep, its wool patterned after the Nonbinary Pride flag, in horizontal stripes of yellow, white, purple, and black; the Dreamwidth logo echoes these colors. (Nonbinary)

Thursday Recs

A teensy bit late, but no worse for it, it's time for Thursday Recs!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

Castle of Deception - Chapter Two

Well, I didn't mean to take a week off, but things got a bit more hectic than I planned.

But now I'm back, for the hopefully redemptive collaboration of Sherman and Lackey in a book that, so far, has not actually annoyed me.

Kevin is kind of whiny and petulant, like Magpie, but so far he hasn't really been a dick to anyone, and also he's fifteen. So, at least for now, I'm willing to give him a shot.

For now. )

The Friday Five for 13 March 2026: Magical Questions

These questions were suggested by [personal profile] spiralsheep.

1. Have you ever watched illusion magic? Close-up, or in a stage show, or on television? Did it work for you?

2. Have you ever wished on a star, or a lucky cat, or a coin in a wishing well? Did it work in some way?

3. Have you ever cast a spell, made a love charm, or tried a curse? Did it work in some way?

4. Are there any other traditional superstitions you pay attention to? Do they work in some way?

5. Would you want major magical powers like in a fantasy story? Which powers, and how would you use them?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

Community Recs Post!

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fancrafts/fanart/fics/fanvids/other kinds of fanworks/podfics have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

X-Men United #1

X-Men United, originally solicited as X-Men Arsenal*, is the follow-up to Exceptional X-Men. Same creative team, same core cast, but an altered premise. It's the training book, but with more characters, and now they have a mental plane headquarters named Graymatter Lane.

*Go on, get the football jokes out of your system. It'll feel good.

Worm Fox Priest Sex Vibes?!: JUSTICE LEAGUE EUROPE #24-25 (JLI 68)

Warning for some uncomfortable sexual symbolism. Keith Riffen, Ger-words Jones, bArt Sears.

Giffen’s Justice League plots are never boring, but this story feels extra unhinged, its elements strung together more by Freudian associations than his usual grounded, working-class perspective. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn the production process involved a six-pack of story dice and some of the more stimulating drugs.

Amphetamines yes, marijuana no. )
