rumgumption

rumgumption (rum-GUMP-shuhn) or rumblergumption (rum-buhl-GUMP-shuhn) - (Scot. & N. Eng.) n., shrewdness, good sense, intelligence.

Somewhat dated, possibly enough that I should mark it as arch. Related term: rumgumptious, which means shrewd but also headstrong or forward in manner, so a bit of semantic drift there. Gumption, meaning good sense and boldness, is also related, as the root, but what the prefix means no one seems to know -- possibly it's just an intensifier?

This is totally random, but I've had something on my mind lately and I realized that the people who could most likely answer my questions are...on my flist!

Some context: when I was still a Christian, I spent a lot of time appreciating the tradition of religious sisters and how that was a lifestyle it was possible to pursue. It just really made me feel good to know that there was this long tradition of women who chose to pursue faith and/or education instead of wifehood/motherhood/family/sex. You could step outside of that and you had a society-sanctioned option to become a nun, spend your life in a community of other women, and sometimes pursue an education or the arts. (Obviously I don't want to idealize life in a religious community, which could be abusive or poverty-stricken as the case may be. But so could marriage!)

Judaism is SO different and more family-focused (for understandable reasons), so I've kind of been missing that, especially since I've been thinking a lot about female mystics lately for Ann Lee reasons (though I am NOT mystic in any way at all and in fact am pretty anti-mystic in both my personality and experience, I find it endlessly fascinating). Were there different points or places in Jewish history, say, pre-19th century, in which women could pursue a different kind of life? Or, even if they married, is there a mystic tradition among Jewish women? I have the vaguest ideas about Jewish mysticism, but I only know it in the context of men.

Or is there something similar in Islam? I know there are Buddhist nuns, but I know little of that either.

I've been thinking a lot about the ways that female mystics in Christianity are both honored and seen as operating within a well-established tradition but also always dangerous and threatening to the power structure and the ways in which they kind of teeter between something that the masculine authorities approve of because they can use it (mostly to prove the power of God) and want to tamp down on because it threatens them, and how the women themselves are just concerned about their relationship with God and sometimes other women, and how complicated all that is. It's just really rich, and I've sort of wanted to write some speculative fiction inspired by it, but I want to draw from wider sources than just Christian ones and I don't know where to start!

I want to be clear that I'm looking for women operating within a patriarchal religion. Obviously there have been women religious figures throughout history--priestesses, shamans, etc.--who wielded great power, both religious and otherwise. Lots of that up to the present day in indigenous religions! And they are super interesting! I want to learn more about them at some point! But right now I'm looking for women who are inhabiting that weird place where them devoting their life to a religion with a male power structure is sanctioned by the larger society, but what they do with that might not be. And women whose experience of that religion is distinctly more mystical/untamed/transcendent than most people's. Give me some women who are married to the divine!

The Labrador and the Sidekick's Sidekick

In a shocking turn of events, I am once again writing missing scene fics for Amor Vincit Omnia ;) There are spoilers below so look away now if you haven't seen the finale.

One of the things I love so much about the wrap up movie is that it gives all the characters a chance to shine, and that's where this fic comes in. Whispers sure talks a lot of shit for a guy chained in a cellar, but Amanita and (especially) Dani get him to shut his damn mouth. The thing I was really interested in was how everyone else would react to that scene since it cuts straight to Riley talking about Bodhi. Fortunately [personal profile] maevedarcy had a request for some Amanita & Dani bonding back during the Sense8 Holiday Exchange, and although I didn't get it done in time for that, I did keep working through what that might look like. Without further ado:

The Labrador and the Sidekick's Sidekick
Giving Whispers his blockers turns into a bonding exercise for Amanita and Dani

Happy Year of the Horse! Have Some Horse-Centric Queer Books!

Text, a clipart of two running horses, and five book covers on a colorful background. The text reads: Chinese New Year Year of the Horse. 5 Queer Books Featuring Horses. The books are: Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire; Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst; Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey; Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce; Return of the Thief by Megan Whalen Turner.

Happy Chinese New Year everyone! We picked our brains to think of queer books in which horses play a prominent role, and we were honestly shocked by how much trouble we had thinking of any, but we managed a list of five! It’s a little astonishing to us, collectively, how many of us were horse girls and now a. can’t think of any books with horses we’ve read recently and b. aren’t girls. ANYWAY. This is our third Chinese New Year list; you can also check out our list of books for the Year of the Dragon (2024) and for the Year of the Snake (2025).

The contributors to the list are: jumblejen, Cedar, Shea Sullivan, Linnea Peterson, Shadaras.

Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire

“Welcome to the Hooflands. We’re happy to have you, even if you being here means something’s coming.”

Regan loves, and is loved, though her school-friend situation has become complicated, of late.

When she suddenly finds herself thrust through a doorway that asks her to “Be Sure” before swallowing her whole, Regan must learn to live in a world filled with centaurs, kelpies, and other magical equines―a world that expects its human visitors to step up and be heroes.

But after embracing her time with the herd, Regan discovers that not all forms of heroism are equal, and not all quests are as they seem…

Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile lands. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a kingdom where magic is forbidden.

Now, Denna must learn the ways of her new home while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine—called Mare—the sister of her betrothed.

When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two become closer, Mare is surprised by Denna’s intelligence and bravery, while Denna is drawn to Mare’s independent streak. And soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.

But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other.

Valdemar: The Last Herald-Mage Series by Mercedes Lackey

Though Vanyel has been born with near-legendary abilities to work both Herald and Mage magic, he wants no part of such things. Nor does he seek a warrior’s path, wishing instead to become a Bard. Yet such talent as his if left untrained may prove a menace not only to Vanyel but to others as well. So he is sent to be fostered with his aunt, Savil, one of the famed Herald-Mages of Valdemar.

But, strong-willed and self-centered, Vanyel is a challenge which even Savil can not master alone. For soon he will become the focus of frightening forces, lending his raw magic to a spell that unleashes terrifying wyr-hunters on the land. And by the time Savil seeks the assistance of a Shin’a’in Adept, Vanyel’s wild talent may have already grown beyond anyone’s ability to contain, placing Vanyel, Savil, and Valdemar itself in desperate peril…

The Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce

Young Daine’s knack with horses gets her a job helping the royal horsemistress drive a herd of ponies to Tortall. Soon it becomes clear that Daine’s talent, as much as she struggles to hide it, is downright magical. Horses and other animals not only obey, but listen to her words. Daine, though, will have to learn to trust humans before she can come to terms with her powers, her past, and herself.

Return of the Thief by Megan Whalen Turner

Neither accepted nor beloved, Eugenides is the uneasy linchpin of a truce on the Lesser Peninsula, where he has risen to be high king of Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis. As the treacherous Baron Erondites schemes anew and a prophecy appears to foretell the death of the king, the ruthless Mede empire prepares to strike. The New York Times–bestselling Queen’s Thief novels are rich with political machinations, divine intervention, dangerous journeys, battles lost and won, power, passion, and deception.

Book Review: All the Blues in the Sky

I was cautiously optimistic about this year’s Newbery winner, Renée Watson’s All the Blues in the Sky, because I liked Watson’s earlier book Piecing Me Together. However, these hopes collapsed when I realized that this is yet another example of my least favorite Newbery genre: Books in Verse About Death.

There is probably someone, someone, who could make me enjoy a Book in Verse about Death, but unfortunate Watson is not that person, or at least this book is not that book.

Our heroine is Sage, who recently lost her best friend when she was hit by a drunk driver while walking to Sage’s house for Sage’s birthday. Sage is now part of the grief group at school, where she sits inwardly sneering at the two members who lost people after a long illness (a grandmother to dementia, and a twin sister to leukemia), because THEY don’t know what it’s like to lose someone unexpectedly.

And, you know, technically this is true. But one feels that at some point someone should point out to Sage that she doesn’t know what it’s like to live in the Valley of the Shadow of Death for years, watching a loved one slowly wither away.

And okay fine, Sage’s Aunt Ini does eventually point out that everyone grieves differently and you can’t directly compare grief etc etc. However, there’s a scene where Sage screams at these girls that they don’t understand anything, and I really, really wanted one of them to scream back that they might not understand her grief but at least they’re TRYING, unlike Sage who very obviously doesn’t give a damn about them. Like, her disdain is so obvious that the other members of Grief Group (the ones who also lost people unexpectedly and are therefore acceptable to Sage) comment that Sage doesn’t like the girls whose relatives died long, slow, agonizing deaths, and Sage responds that it’s because they “don’t know how good they had it.”

But of course no one screams back at Sage. Of course when Sage apologizes, everyone accepts it, instead of telling her to stuff her apology where the sun don’t shine, or at least pointing out the fact that she blew up about how the others don’t understand her pain when she hasn’t been trying even slightly to understand theirs.

And then! And then! spoilers for the ending )

恭喜發財! (Chinese New Year Picspam)

Since we haven't had a picspam post lately, I thought maybe we could do one for Chinese New Year and post pics of your favorite C-ent actors/actresses/drama characters/singers etc. dressed up for the holiday (from any year!), whether for a photo shoot, ad, spring gala performance, music video, drama scene, or anything else. Gifs or links to videos also welcome! :)

You can mention the actor/character/drama in your comment if you like (and add as much detail as you want), or just post your pics out of context. Spoiler cuts can be found in previous picspam posts if you need them!

I've had a letter from Buckingham Palace

I wrote to the King, asking him not to visit the United States as part of their celebration of 250 years of independence from the UK and our monarchs.

I have had a reply.

Sadly it is marked "Private and Confidential" so I cannot tell you what it said.

I wasn't really hoping for a reply and the King now knows how I feel.
I will just have to hope that he does the right thing.

The only previous time I wrote to the Palace, the Queen was overtaken by events:
Boris resigned whilst I was at the post box !

When I went up to bed last night, my Beast announced that the cat had peed in the bidet.

On the whole, I'm inclined to think that if Sable wishes to urinate somewhere in our bedroom suite, the bidet is about the best bet. The shower would also do, but then she'd get her feet wet and leave unwelcome little footprints everywhere.

On the other hand—why? Sable, why? You have a litter tray and an entire garden, which have between them sufficed for several years.

Sigh. Cat urine is very pungent, and the anti-urine spray is not much less unpleasant.

*

Still. I woke up with a horrendous cold this morning so I'm probably not getting the full, er, impact of the smell.

so are you guys into evil wizards getting dicked down or what

So I've been pretty open about these two pseuds being connected for a while now, but because I'm always thirsty for comments I might as well let you guys know that, off and on, I've been writing Orignal Works pornography as [archiveofourown.org profile] kuntar. Most of these involve:

  • an arrogant, wealthy, evil and very slutty fop of a sorcerer who gets Whumped Intensely by Even Worse Dudes who make Archive Warnings Apply to him, heavily
  • a kind, brawny paladin who begrudgingly saves his life a lot even though they're enemies and the sorcerer kind of ruined his life
  • they smooch a lot

The most recent story (which I just finished finally editing, woooo!):

  • Sweet Honey, Loathsome | 20k, Complete | M/M, Explicit | Vaunted, a kind paladin, opens his door to find that his longtime enemy, the evil wizard Wrathbyrne, has been stripped of his powers and placed under a curse: Wrathbyrne has to get fucked once a day or he dies.

Previous stories, all of which are standalones that each exist in their own little universes, slightly "canon"-divergent from one another:

  • Lord Wrathbyrne's Highly Unpleasant Year | 72k, WIP | M/M, Explicit | An evil wizard gets non-conned by a bunch of other evil dudes and then rescued by Fake He-Man.
  • Roadside Attractions | 5k, Complete | M/M, Explicit | A cartoonishly evil wizard and his heroic, good guy foe are handcuffed together in a sitcom predicament. Then they get dosed with sex pollen.
  • Reformation | 13k, WIP | M/M, Explicit | The Good Council of Good has a soft-spoken death cleric attempt to rehabilitate the evil wizard and turn him into a good man. Obviously, this is just an excuse for whump and Archive Warnings To Apply to the evil wizard, who hopes local hero, Vaunted the nice paladin, will save him. Even though the nice paladin is the one who arrested him in the first place. Oops.

Anyway, if any of this sounds up your alley, I hope you check 'em out, I love my little guys. <3

Not quite 365 days questions meme february

17. Chinese New Year begins today, and festivities continue until March 3rd – the year of the Fire Horse. What animal are you born under in Chinese astrology?

I'm a water dragon.
Animal: Dragon
Element: Water
Polarity: Yang
Personality traits: ambitious, intelligent, and energetic. The water tempers the fire in the dragon. I'm supposed to be more calm, and flexible.
Compatibility:dragons are traditionally most compatible with the Rat and monkey, while often clashing with the Dog. My hubby of 56 years is also the Water Dragon. Dang it he's not a rat or a monkey. 😂 we probably won't last. Hahaha.
