Life Sorted Out

You know your internet is working when you start getting headaches from staring at the screen so long. The good stuff just sucks you into it.

Though I suppose I could blame some of this on the fact that I've been working on translating this rather long document- it's getting progressively easier because they tend to repeat themselves, or at least use the same vocabulary, but not that much faster. Also, huge overuse of the Genetiv.

I found out from Karel that Danish is not as complicated as I thought. I assumed, from what she had said about how difficult it was, that it had some of the same grammatical complexity as German. But it doesn't actually have cases, so I guess I was just wrong on that count.

I have to say, that I'm feeling rather proud of my German at this moment. When one is immersed in a world of native-speakers of a language, you tend to get to point where you just assume people can speak a language, even if you have only ever spoken to them in a completely different language. To have someone I know, and to whom I talk a lot, be completely unable to understand German was kind of a wake-up. I have learned quite a lot, even if it's all just random stuff that I cobble a workable existence out of.

I'm getting my financial work sorted out, finally. The Austrian account that I got saddled with is rather crap- it doesn't actually have checks, and you can't use it to pay for anything online, only in person. So, I have figured out a way to get online banking for my preexisting credit card, so I will be able to use and pay the damn sucker easily and wrack up some good credit history for myself, and still be able to buy plane tickets when I need them. Life goes on nicely.

A Morning Well Spent

After two trips to the bank and one rather confused conversation with a nice man at the post office, I believe that I have correctly transfered money to pay my credit card bill. I'm going to wait a few days and see how it goes down, but according to the girl at the bank this is free, so this might not be so unfortunate a situation as I thought I would have to engage in. (The first bank guy with a semi-decent command of English and a confused expression was unable to figure out what I wanted, but going back an hour later he'd been replaced by a far more competent young woman who helped me do what I needed to do.)

In other news, listening to ten covers of "Jolene" is a bizarre and wonderful experience made possible by Deezer.com

My roomie's sister will be moving into this building, so that my roomie will actually probably not be moving out. That's kind of nice, because I actually rather like my roomie and her sister is interesting. I think we could be friends.
